Please help, I did something silly and found a few suggestions somewhere on line for having a general tidy up/defrag. etc and Word has now gone wierd! I now have a strange icon for word like peices fom a jigsaw puzzle. When I try to open it I get a msg saying click the progam that you want to openword.pip.
I seem to remember doing something that reset my settings or something to when the PC was new. As i'm sure you are all aware, I haven't got a clue what i'm doing and I shouldn't have done anything!Any suggestions? Someone said to search for winword.exe, I did and it searched c: vey quickly and came up with nothing.

When I try to open them or Powerpoint I get a windows installing msg saying that it is trying to install the XP components. Then it says that the operating system is not configured to run these components.
Soneone did last yr try to install XP professional on here, but I didn't think it worked and I don't have the discs.

Reinstalling office sounds like a good idea. But if the Dell software doesn't let you do that, try the following:

Right click on a DOC file and select 'Open with'. Then either select 'word' or the 'choose program' option, browse to Word and select it.
Do the same thing with an Excel file and select Excel to open it.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

You could try this first:

1. Run scandisk. If it finds any errors fix them then reboot.

2. If the above doesn't help Restart in MS-DOS and type scanreg /restore (hit Return key). Select a registry dated just before the problem happened. Type exit (hit Return) to restart Windows.

Try reinstalling MS Office and then try opening your files again, they should work.
