Hi, I have a problem with Word 97 running under Win 95. Whenever I open a word document by double clicking on it from within Windows Explorer it automatically starts up Word and displays it with all the correct formatting....great! But when I open the same document from within Word i.e File, Open it displays the document but not all the formatting is there. Text boxes are replaced with jumbled characters, etc. Why is this happening? I have tried re-installing office but the same problem occurs. Any advice greatly appreciated.

Sounds as though you have a problem with file corruption. Did you uninstall word 97 before you re-installed it. Have you tried to open it with the correct formatting and then copied it to see if it happens again, and does it only happen on the same file, or are they all like it?

I did uninstall Office before re-installing it. It does happen on most files but then again not all files have the same formatting. I haven't tried copying the file to see if it still has the same problem. I'll do that next...Thanks.

I had the same problem. The dialog box had symbols and I received an I/O error (0 or 6) when I tried to open anything. I found the fix on Microsoft's website.
