Hi Ya'll!
A couple weeks ago my computer here at work was gettin' all funky so I quickly backed up all my documents and favorites (bookmark.htm)just incase, to another machine on the network, replaced my power supply and then transferred the stuff back. One problem - I forgot to transfer my bookmark.htm file back over to my machine and deleted it on the other. Is there anywhere else the computer might store the links? I know there are undelete programs out there, but the one I tried was really goofy. I tried it on both machines. When I tried it on the network machine (where I backed the files up to) I found My Music, but I think that was it. No Pictures, or other files. My computer gets a lot of use, so the deleted bookmark file's ahrd drive sector could have been rewritten. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I really need my favorites back.
thanks

If the hard disk sectors where the file was have been overwritten, the chances are extremely slim without an expensive professional data recovery service. Especially on a network machine with high use.
The (hidden/system) file index.dat may possibly hold retrievable data. It can be (I believe) viewed/manipulated with a .dat file utility. Spider(sp?) comes to mind.

You might be able to find copies of your bookmark.htm (or bookmarks.html depending on version) file floating around in the C:\Temp or C:\Windows\Temp directories as .tmp files. Some versions of Netscape / Mozilla / Firefox tend to do this at times.

I use Internet Explorer so it doesn't save and temps unfortunately. Could there possibly be anything in the registry?

You can load up INDEX.DAt into wordpad and trawl through it for URLs I have done that to shock a colleaugue at work who said no-one would tell what sites he had visited that day as he had deleted all Temp files and Temp internet files and cleared history etc, took me about 30 seconds to start telljng him where he had been.
Easiest way would probably be to open index.dat in wordpad, open word then copy the urls into a word document so the u just click on then open the page then add to favourites again. You won`t find all of your favourites but you should find a good many of your regularly visited pages there.

Use the computer with the deleted files as little as possible. Deleted files will get overwritten, the more it is used. Then recovery will be all but impossible. The network might be an issue as mentioned by Dan Penny.
Download Restoration (save it to a floppy not your hard drive). Run it from the floppy. Read the Readme.txt file. When you open it, make sure it is set to the correct drive (C:\ is default). Click the Search Deleted Files Button. It takes just a little time for that. Then when Do you want to scan vacant clusters? comes up, click Yes. This takes a long time. Don't touch anything until it finishes. Then look for your files among the list. If they don't show up - they are gone.

Everyone should have an "undelete" program on their computer. Restoration has been my favorite for a few years.

I wonder mhy M$ don`t include an undelete with Windoze? They used to have an Unformat command at one time.

"I wonder mhy M$ don`t include an undelete with Windoze?"
MS had an "Undelete" (with three levels of protection) back in dos 5.x and I think 6.x. Once the windows GUI took the front place in the O/S (Win95) and dos became "hidden", the Recycle Bin became the undelete safety factor.

I think undelete was included in MS Dos up until vers. 6.22 w/ enhanced tools. It was a nice OS along with Windows for Workgroups 3.11. Ahhhh the good old days. A 386DX/40 w/ 4mb ram. I held onto that for a good while, running my 4 node BBS...
