when I turn on the computer,it starts to boot up then stops at the screen that says IBM. I have tried to start it in safe-mode by pressing the f8 button, but it does nothing. I even tried tapping the f8 button and it still stops at the IBM screen. I have even tried starting it up with every button from F1 to F12 with no results. I have two laptops doing the same thing and this point they are useless. If anyone has any ideas I could sure use them.
It sounds like the computer has a hardware problem, it can't find the disk with the operating system or the BIOS has been corrupted. I don't know about IBM-specific buttons, but if you're not making it past the IBM screen the F8 key won't do you any good. Try pressing and holding some of the following key combinations. You might also be able to Google the IBM model number and "BIOS entry key" without quotes.
Delete Shift + Delete Insert Shift + Insert Ctrl + Any F key Ctrl + Shift + Any F key
If you can't get in with any normal key combination (or the one you find via Google) you're probably going to have to take it into a repair shop or send them to IBM so the hardware can be tested.
Do you get a sequence of beeps on boot? If it beeps at all, especially a sequence, that can be an error code.
Yes i get beeps at boot. it is so weird one hasn't worked for two months and i had the other one on yesterday and it booted right up and then today it wouldn't. they have not been on the internet so i don't think it is a virus. when it tries to boot up all the icons on the computer light up but after that only one icon stays on and i don't know what it is, it looks like a camera it is square with a little round circle in it.
