I have just reinstalled windows 98 onto a PC.
the trouble is that it will only boot into safe mode.
when in safe mode I can not see any conflicts .
when it tries to boot normally it gets past the stage of loading windows then goes back to the dos type screen and I just get a flashing cursor. I can not type anything. I have tried booting using the confirm every entry option. the last thing it asks for is MSMOUSE. after that it just hangs. Any ideas please. I have tried a differnt hard drive and I just get the same. I have also tried reinstalling windows. Any other ideas please

Try temporarily renaming config.sys and autoexec.bat

You have a corrupt reg. file. Run scanreg and
scandisk if you can in safe mode. Just went
through that last week on a customer's machine. And,yes you can corrupt the reg. file
on a clean install if it is not done properly
I've seen it and you have experienced it.

I had this problem with the same problem. I fixed it by booting up with the win98 bootup disk, at a prompt type in fdisk /mbr and also do the c: sys

Possible memory problem. My PC did the same thing and ended up being bad memory stick. Try removing memory sticks one by one and booting up and see if that works.

Try removing add-on cards from your machine, you might find that it may be a card that has failed. Run the bare minimum while installing

Hi, I have had this same prob also, after I had accidently chose, "Restart in MS-Dos Mode" once, and was stuck there after quiting, to either a flashing curser, or after re-booting I could get into safe mode no problem, but could not restart into regular Windows no way. I called MS tech-support and they had me go into safe mode, run msconfig and start unchecking things untill i found what item there that was keeping from booting up regularly. I dont remember which it was, sorry, but i do think it was one item in the Autoexec.bat or the Config.sys causing the problem.
