Won't boot, even in safe mode

I am having problems with a Sony Vaio laptop. It won't boot and when I try to boot in safe mode, it goes through 4 command lines, and then I get a message that says missing file WINNT/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM and to use the recovery disk. This wants to reformat an repartition the drives, and I would like to be able to save many of the files. Any suggestions?

Hi Mike. Insert a boot disk and at the Dos Prompt type fdisk /mbr this will refresh your master boot record and should solve your problem. Remember to leave a space between the k and the forward slash/ Have a nice day.

Not much help I know, but did you spot that there is a Windows 2000 forum (top left)? They may be better able to assist on this.
