I have a brand new PC running Windows 98 v 2.
On the bootup, I receive a message that the windows registry or System.Ini is looking for a device file. It is looking for WOL558.vxd. I checked out the system ini file, the system registry will no avail. Any ideas on how to fix this?

I also got this error except it is on a windows 95 machine this has something to do with ethernet drivers does it not? If you need the computer up on the network if it's on one do not remove registry entry as it will prevent it from getting network connection even if it is a token ring network seems to stop any network card working so any other resolution?

I received this error after I deleted the network card. Reinstalled the drivers for the card but still received the error. Downloaded the file from http://borg.ucsb.edu/ftproot/pub/intel/nic/pro100plus/v3.1/extracted and copied it to c:\windows\system. Rebooted the machine and the error was gone.

A quick way to fix this problem: Go into control panel, double click on network. Click on Add, double click on protocol, left click on microsoft, and a list should appear at the right hand side of the screen. scroll down until you see NetBEUI. Double click on this file, then click on Add. Click on OK and it will ask you to restart your computer. Do so and the problem is gone.

My problems started when I installed the latest drivers from Intel's site. After doing so I got the above error and my NIC wouldn't work. Copying across the file (as in response #4) got rid of the error message but the card itself still wouldn't work.
I went into Network Neighborhood and looked at the properties of my NIC and noticed that under the 'Driver Type' tab none of the boxes were selected. I checked the 32-bit Enhanced mode box, it copied a few files and I got the Restart prompt. When it came back up all was well again. (Was it worth it though? :)

I was also wondering if there was a way to go around these requirements of needing a network password to get into the site or if there is another way for me to acquire that file.
Please help

I got the Wol558.vxd error when rebooting after installing drivers for a new Intel ethernet card I just inserted. Apparently the install didn't go well for some reason. The Intel card did not work and did not show up on Device Manager but my old card that I just removed was still there. So I removed all ethernet devices in Network properties, reseated the card, Reinstalled the drivers, then added & configured network services and protocals. The ethernet card worked and no more wol558.vxd error. No need to mess with registry.
