I've just upgrade to Windows Media Player 9 and now whenever I open WMP, I get an error "An Internal Application error has occurred" and it closes down. 'mplayer2' is fine. I tried uninstalling WMP9 and reinstalling WMP7.1, but whenever 7.1 opens, the inner portions of the window are all gray. The controls are not visible. I keep finding things on the net, but none of them have answers.

The following is a screenshot taken when WMP7 is open, where the controls are not visible:

Just copy/paste into a new window. Thanks

I would suggest you to uininstall both versions of WMP and then Reinstall WMP9.0 and then go to Windows Update and do all the Critical Updates including Internet Explorer6 SPacks and other security patches for WMP 9.0

I tried to uninstall and reinstalling and getting the same message. My restore point is not working properly, so I wasn't able to restore. My operating system is me, so what I did was go into windows explorer/windows media player/installer/mpsetup click on it and it installed fine. I'm no computer wiz it's just thru trial and error. Now if I can just figure out why my system restore is not working.

ok heres what we do.
i had this same problem and didnt find crap on anything on the internet, but i did fix the problem.
first,
i uninstalled windows media player. of course i tried uninstalling and reinstalling but of course that doesnt work. antivirus didnt pick up on anything, but never the less its a virus. i'll explain later.

heres what i did.
i uninstalled windows media player again. it was messing with my internet explorer too so i did the return to previous internet explorer version option when you try to uninstall internet explorer. before doing that i tried to just reinstall the internet explorer 6 pack but it said there was an unfinished uninstall so it couldnt complete the task. that was the virus doing its work.

so then i restarted and used a program called system mechanic. it has a feature that does a registry clean. it will clean your registry of everything it no longer uses. and since windows media player was no longer there it deleted the registry of anything that used windows media player

i also did a search on my computer for files with the wmp in the name and deleted them. this is kinda risky so make sure it says wmp. its not smart to just start deleting stuff.

after i did this i was able to run the internet explorer 6 pack. then i restarted. on restart my antivirus caught the virus during reboot, just before it booted into windows.

windows reboots and im able to use internet explorer again the way i wanted it. i tried reinstalling windows media player 9 and this time it worked. no more error.

i know this is kinda jumbled but try following it as best as you can. virus scans dont keep your system totally protected.
also do a search for system mechanic and you can download a demo version.

hope this helps everyone.

I had this same error, and not only that but my Norton Antivirus quit functioning, most of my javascript functions and the search for Windows XP. I found an aswer though. What you want to do is download Windows Script 5.6, that will fix everything up like a dream without even a restart. You can get it here:

For Windows 98, Windows Millennium Edition, and Windows NT 4.0

I had the same problem - my virus scanners didn't find anything, but I deleted NAV and a bunch of other stuff so I probably killed a dll somewhere. Immortalpain's suggestion worked like a charm.

Thanks!!!
