Comment:
I made a mistake. I installed windows media player 9 over wmp 7.1 (which was doing just fine). Now, no audio. In a dropdown box for wmp I get the message " An internal application error has occurred". Am unable to get satisfaction at windows knowledge base website. Help.

Click Start / Settings / Control Panel / Add-Remove programs. Scroll down to WMP version 7 or 9 and remove them. Reboot and reinstall the version you want.

OK then go into Start / Programs and right click and delete it manually. You can also use Windows Explorer if ya wish.

Make sure there is no Uninstall for either of these in the Start Menu, if so use it.
Otherwise all you will find in Start/Programs will be shortcuts to a few WMP files. You also need to delete the Windows Media Player folders in c:\program files.
No idea what other files might be spattered around except one in c:\windows called wmplibrary with a .db extension (there are a few underscores and version figures in it's name)
I hate the idea of hacking out files but it seems you have no alternative. Run a registry checker afterwards or shut down to DOS and type scanreg /fix
