Thanks for reading and helping!!!
I have my Pentium 4 HP pavilion computer hooked up to broadband. It's wonderful. I also have 3 teenagers who are constantly fighting over it, plus me, so I want to hook up my old Dell Pentium II, Windows 95. I purchased a Linksys Wireless Router G, and a Wireless B PCI adapter. I hooked it all up, and the old Dell says it won't work because I don't have Windows 5.5 on it. Help! I can't download Windows 5.5 because the dial up modem doesn't work on it anymore. Any suggestions? Many, many thanks to all of you!

OOPS! The Dell Pentium II has Windows 98, not 95. Does that help?

Windows 5.5?

Do you mean IE 5.5?

I'm not saying there should be a capital punishment for stupidity, but why don't we just take the safety labels off of everything and let the problem solve itself?

Yes, Mr. Boy,
I meant Internet Explorer 5.5.
Thanks so much for correcting my mistake.
Could you be kind enough to help? Sounds like maybe you know quite a bit about computers.

It seemed like a fair guess, although one never knows.

'Mr.' isn't necessary

IE 5.5 and higher is often found on promotional CDs, such as those for AOL

It seems odd to me that the hardware would require a minimum IE version - that seems more like a software requirement.

That version of IE is maybe 80 Mb, it would take some time to d/l via a telephone modem - if you can network or otherwise connect the two computers, you could run the installation that way - otherwise you could attach the 98 machine's hard drive as a slave to the P4 and copy over the IE installation files.

I assume that you need IE5.5 before you can install the wireless adapter.

If your old 98 pc has a network card in it (not the wireless adapter card, just a regular network card), then set up the w98 pc by the router, run a network cable from it to the router, hook up to the internet and download IE 5.5, and then install it on the 98 pc. At the same time, you can add any of the 98 windows updates using the fast broadband connection. Once you are done, shut your system down, unhook the cable, install the wireless adapter card, run the set up for it and then you should be able to connect to the internet from whereever the 98 pc sits through the router.

Here's an address on the net for IE downloads:
http://browsers.evolt.org/?ie/32bit go to the microsoft site for any windows updates.

have fun, Al

Sure - I've only ever used a wired network - for those, all that's required are the appropriate Windows drivers and network protocols.

Internet Connection Sharing (ICS) itself will allow a connection to any 9x machine with IE/Netscape 3xx

I'm not sure why a PCI wireless adaptor would require IE 5.5 or greater. Wireless adaptors are often used in pure network environments. As such they have no need for a browser.

One possible hurdle you might find is the requirement for Windows 98SE. The first edition of Win98 won't do. Is this perchance the message you received?

Personally I would not expose a computer to the internet with anything less than the latest version of IE. In fact, if I'm forced to use IE (rather than another browser), I run virus and adware/spyware scanners immediately afterward.
