I have been using a computer running on Windows 98 for some time now. It has become cluttered with internet downloads and other programs, and there are constant error messages popping up telling me files are missing or corrupted. Im tempted to wipe the hard drive clean, but all I have to reinstall Windows 98 is a CD entitled Windows 98 Upgrade, and then it says Second Edition at the top. What Im wondering is if this is enough to get my computer functioning again after I wipe it clean (which, come to think of it, I dont know how to do). I also have another computer that runs on Windows ME. If the Windows 98 CD isnt enough to get my computer running after its wiped, could I just use the reinstall disks from my windows ME computer? The computer im about to wipe is a pentium II. I dont know if that would effect how ME would run on it. Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

If you format the drive, you will need `proof of ownersip' of a prior windows system (a Win95 CD for example) to install with an `upgrade' CD.

If you don't have a previous version as verification, here's a way to use an upgrade cd as a full version:

http://www.btinternet.com/~robert.bale1/win98up.htm

Basically you copy the contents of the upgrade cd into a folder on the HD and then get a full version precopy2.cab file and copy it over the upgrade version.

The precopy2 downloads on Bale's site appear to be first edition. If you need second edition I can email you the file. You should use a retail and not OEM version of the file so that the product key on the upgrade cd will work.
