I recently installed a new m/b and also the bios drivers etc, everything but the sound works fine except ME now only acknowleges the LAN but won't share the internet.
To begin with, the Cable modem was on the ME machine but has since been moved to my other machine running 98SE. It was originally shared from the ME machine to the 98 machine but now I want it to share the other way. ME has had it's second network card removed and added to the 98 machine to enable me to share the internet from upstairs.
ME started off OK by seeing all the files in my shared folders on the 98 machine. However, even though it has all been set up exactly as before (obviously in reverse), ME fails to get on the net.
It started with "IE has caused an error in 'unknown'" and shut down every time it tried to find a web site. By tracking it down and finally deleting newdotnet references from the registry, it finally stopped this and does not close down every time. However, now I have the error "failed to initialize Winsock" from Winipcfg. It won't even get the IP address etc from the 98 machine as per the ICS requirement.
I even tried a manual setup of the IP address to 192.168.0.2 My Lan card from upstairs being 192.168.0.1 and both masks as 255.255.255.0 and I even set up the gateway on the ME machine to look for 192.168.0.1 so it always tries to get to the Internet from the 98 machine.
Correct me if I am wrong but I thought winsock was used for LAN connections as well. If it works for one, it should work for the other. Now I *am* confused.
