Lately, I've been noticing bookmarks being placed in my "favorites" folder, that I didn't put there. I'm pretty sure it was a little program called: Winoscfg.exe
I have no clue where I picked this up from, it was before I had my PC-Cillin installed...so I think IE downloaded it, and ran it. Its now through-out my registry. Another name its under is DSS, I'm not sure what it stands for.
I also noticed, when I'm not doing any internet activity, and I'm connected, I begin to recieve and send data, and at times the program crashes, and an error message pops up.
So, if any of you have experienced this, let me know how exactly to get rid of it. Its quite annoying. Thanks,
Justin

No hits on winoscfg - However, the symptoms are suspicious. I'd do a full virus scan.
Several will add items to your favorites folder:
vbs/lucky
js/logo
ja/fav
w32/creepy.a@mm
w32/mix2048
irc/prophecy@mm
js/offensive
unsafe js

Hey Justin,
What error message are you receiving?
Are you sure on the spelling for Winoscfg.exe?Post Back
Good Day!

By the way - DSS (Or, DSS Agent) is installed by Mattel (the toy guys). It's spyware, and they've since changed their position on installing it. (It wasn't really a big hitter, but it sure didn't look good for the company.)
It can be deinstalled manually, or by downloading Ad-Aware and running a scan.
HTH

Mesich -
It is spelt right. The error I get when it crashes is the Kernel32 error. Or "fault" error.
Thanks,
Justin

KERNEL32.DLL Errors can be caused from many different problems.
Damaged swap file
File allocation damage
Damaged password list
Damaged or incorrect version of the KERNEL32.DLL file
Damaged registry
Hardware, hot CPU, over clocking, broken power supply, RF noise, ground bounce, or bad hard disk controller
BIOS settings for Wait states, RAM timing, or other BIOS settings
Third-party software that is damaged or incorrectly installed
.DLL files that are saved to the desktop
Non-existent or broken Temp folder
A control panel (.CPL) file is damaged
Incorrect or damaged hardware driver
Damaged .LOG files
Damaged entries in the History folder
Incompatible or damaged dynamic link library files
Viruses
Damaged or incorrect MSINFO32.exe file
Low disk spaceI would suggest the follow first.
Scan Disk
System File Checker
Virus Scan
Monitor your memory by inserting this line in your config.sys.
DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\HIMEM.SYS /TESTMEM:ON
And watch for a message like: “HIMEM has detected unreliable memory at address xxxxxxxxx” .
Bad video drivers are also know to cause KERNEL32.DLL Errors.
Download the latest driver for your video card or just reload your driver.Repeated KERNEL32.DLL Error can be resolved by deleting your Windows swap file,
win386.swp and letting it rebuild itself.Unfortunatly a KERNEL32.DLL Error is so broad in the range of troubleshooting that it can be a bear to figure out sometimes.
Try the above suggestions and post back.
Good Day!

Justin,
Do as Ellis said in Post #3 First and Rid yourself of the program!
Sorry Ellis!
Good Day!

I recently ran Mcafee virus scan and it said that Winoscfg.exe was infected, along with 0313.INS, 86102025.INS, 27296716.INS, and 31861617.INS. All these files were located in my Windows/Temp folder, so I tried getting these files from my computer at home...also with Win98, but I couldn't find them anywhere. Are these files important, or were they just added from certain internet pages? And what can/should I do?
Thanks alot

Hi there.
I was installing a program when a Norton Antivirus windows popped up saying it had found a trojan. It was winoscfg.exe, but I didn't pay attention to it and continued. Later, when I realized my error, Norton Antivirus had stopped working. :? I reinstalled it, but it isn't still working. I searched the web and found this:"...The program at www.hackology.com called HTTPBrute Forcer has 3 worms in it called,
winoscfg.exe, dss.exe and dss4.exe
They are pretty crap, but they are still worms, so don't bother getting anything from this site.
The worms are located in c windows, and run in start up.
If anyone has these, reboot in DOS, and delete winoscfg.exe:cd:\windows
del winoscfg.exeFrom here you can clean out the rest from windows, not forgetting to clean them out of registry. ..."
Also, I can't open symantec pages. I don't know if it has something to do with the trojan.
I think I'm going to format my HD.
