I am sure this has been answered many times but I did a search and can't find a clear answer to my problem. I recently installed two programs and now some of my old programs won't work. When I try to open them I get an error message "wininet.dll is linked to missing export shlwapi.dll:wnsprintfA". Also my IE4 will not run. The two additions were DirectX 9.0a and Webster's CD-ROM Encyclopedia. I think the Websters changed my wininet.dll and it no longer works with my version of shlwapi.dll. My wininet is version 5.00.2614.3500 and under properties it says 2000 OS. My shlwapi is version 4.72.3110.0 and props says it's NT OS. I am sure that it is just a mismatch but how do I fix this problem?

bring those to files up in find.
rename the files to .old
reboot, then go back and at the run line,
type in
sfc.
in there , extract those 2 files from the 98 disk.
reboot

If you are running IE version 6, both of those guys have been back leveled. Hopefully If you do a 'repair' on Internet Explorer, it will upgrade those files.
To do a repair, go to add/remove programs, select IE for removal and you will get the repair option.
And yes, I agree that is was probably Websters that did the damage.

Thanks kjanx!! I didn't have to change shlwapi since I still had the original version from the install of 98 but I did change the wininet.dll back to the original and now everything works again.
