Comment:

I just install Norton System Works, Everything but Norton CleanSweep works.
It always gives me an error message

"The WININET.DLL file is linked to missing export SHLWAPI.DLL:UrlCanonicalizA."

Please help.

Thanks in advance

We have a Win95 machine that does not have any Norton loaded & this message pops up at unpredictable intervals...Our (unsatisfactory) solution is re-boot....
Is there ANY other solution?

just found the answer to that in microsnot's knowledge (or lack of knowledge) database on the technet site (www.microsoft.com - click on IT professionals). just do a search for wininet.dll and look through the found list. can't remember exactly what the subject was but you'll know it when you see it. sorry, can't be more helpful, have to go solve my problem. wininet is permanently in use by windows, even in safe mode. trying to rename unsuccesfully.

good luck

The wininet.dll comes with the Internet Explorer. There is an older version that can't do everything (e.g. https connection), and there is a newer version (in the IE 4.0) that has more features but it needs the linked shlwapi.dll. You can get these files if you install the new IE. However there are pages on the internet where you can download these files only (e.g. http://www.aptnet.com/faq.htm).
The dll files should be copied to the WINDOWS\SYSTEM folder.

Other solution is in DOS mode. Delete the wininet.dll file; it is locate it in your windows/system folder. After this restart and reinstall your internet explorer.

Your right it is the wininet.dll file causing all the problems. The only way you can change it is to delete or rename in true dos as windows always uses this file.

I have tried three earlier versions of the file ... norton at that point will work but IE explorer won't. Gotta love MS ...

Bottom line I have to figure this out :)
