Go to 'performance' in system in control panel and see if anything's running in msdos compatibility mode. If not, see if 'add new hardware' in control panel turns it up.

Hi wawadave...try this
1. Go to Device Manager
2. Click first entry in Hard Disk Controllers, which will be for PCI BUS Master IDE Controller
3. Click Properties and then Settings
4. In Dual IDE Channel Settings, choose "BOTH IDE Channels enabled"

hello
i checked performance and yes there are things running in msdos compatabilitie mode now what ?
thanks
and krystyna i,ll check your solution tomorrow and post back with resaults
have a nice day

Scanreg/restore works when my cdrom does that. But since it's been that way since you reinstalled windows it wouldn't work for you.
There's a lot of things that can cause that--hardware conflicts, viruses, drivers--so I don't think a specific answer is possible. But that is the reason your cdrom isn't showing up. A google search using 'ms dos compatibility mode' will turn up a lot of info.
A recent post suggested that loading dos drivers in config.sys was more likely to cause that to happen. If you are doing that you might want to temporarily rename config.sys and autoexec.bat and see if that helps. Exit to dos and at the prompt type:
ren config.sys config.xxx
and return. And
ren autoexec.bat autoexec.xxx
and return. This will rename them with an xxx extension so they won't be processed. If it doesn't work you can rename them back:
ren config.xxx config.sys
ren autoexec.xxx autoexec.batHopefully it'll turn out to be an easy fix--maybe Krystyna's suggestion will work.

Possible that you also have a boot sector virus...since there was not a NOIDE in the registry.
Boot with a clean write-protected Win 95 floppy, and at A:\ prompt, type
FDISK /MBR

hello done the fdisk /mbr
win 95b dose not have scanregrestore.
setting the ide drives to deul chanels brings the cd-rom icon up in device manager but cant get driver from cabs and have you to figure how to get them from full install cd of 95
thx for your help i,ll try the advice
and post back

Sounds like changing the setting is the right thing to do. You might try going to Acer's site to find a chipset update. If they're not around anymore find the chipset manufacturer (Intel, Via, etc.) and check their sites.

would like for someone to email me and see if they can help me with simular problems.my cd is showing up in my computer but its not in device manager.i have win98se.and my cd does work but not showing up in device manager.how can i get it back in it?
