hi i really hope someone can help! I have a laptop which

only has a floppy drive. I have gone into command prompt

by using the windows 98 SE boot disk. I have formated

and copied the HOLE contents of the windows 98 SE CD ROM

using floppys on to my laptop. Which took a very long

time! I have created a folder and put win98 in C:\win98

i am very sure that nothing went wrong when i was

copying the contents because i checked each file as i

coppied by doing DIR C:\win98 and checking the size to

see if it was ok. But when i type c:\win98\setup.exe

nothing happens its just says something like ivaild

command or file! :( what should i do and what have i

done wrong?! please please please help!

Thank you very much

Miles

hole contents??

when you copy an operating system to floppies, the exe file that starts the setup doesn't copy. its only the first few bytes of the file, which is enough to stop the install.
good luck

Miles,

How did you copy the Win98 directory?

In the link below is how I have successfully copied the Win98 directory to the hard drive and installed Windows.

I am very interested in Mesich's instructions! One question: when you partitioned for the separate partition to copy your Win98 files to, how large did you make the partition, and did you call it LBA, Large, or Normal? Any other special tips? I'd like to give it a try! Thanks!

Hi Patty,

I will try and make this so that I don't confuse anyone.

First, if your primary partition is using all of the drive space you will not be able to create an Extended Drive using Fdisk.
Fdisk would first require you to delete the primary partition, create a new primary partition and limiting the size of the partition.

In order to change the size of the primary partition without first deleting it you would need to use something like Partition Magic.

Of course if you delete the primary partition you will lose all of your data.

Everyone uses and manages their computer differently. With this in mind setting up partition sizes will vary depending on the user. Here is how I set up a 20Gb hard drive to dual boot Win98 and WinXP.

Created a primary partition that I intended to install Win98 on.
When prompted it enable Large Disk Support selected [Y].

Select Create Dos Partition or Logical Dos Drive from the options.
When asked "Do you wish to use the max. available size for a primary dos partition select [N]

You will then be prompted to enter the size you wish to use for that partition. You can type it in Mb's or use a percentage. I used 25% creating a 5Gb primary partition.

After that one is created you will need to create an Extended Dos partition. The Extended Dos Partition is where the Logical Dos Drives will be placed. These are your other partitions. You can actually have 23 of these.

From the main menu again select Select Create Dos Partition or Logical Dos Drive from the options.

From the next menu select create an Extended partition.
It will ask you for the size.
I entered the remaining disk space on the hard drive, 15Gb.

You will then get a message No Logical Drives Defined.

It will then ask you for the size of the logical drive. I put 7Gb here as I intended to load WinXP on it.

I then created another logical drive using the remaining 8Gb for programs I intended to share between the two operating system along with a copy of the Win98 directory, backup of all my drivers, favorites, email ect....

So I ended up with C: having Windows 98 on a 5Gb partition.

D: Using WinXP on a 7Gb partition.

E: 8Gb for shared programs such as Microsoft Office. Backups for drivers ect... and the Win98 Directory with the .cab files.

Hope this answers your questions.

Mesich
