I'm running windows98 on and IBM thinkpad 560x, and it always hangs on the shutdown screen. I must turn off the computer to shut it down. Any suggestions? thank you.

There must be something wrong with one of the files. May be the only way is to re-install windows again.

if you are on a network
It cannot say goodbye to the master browser
or a peer and locks up the shutdown.

I tested this to be true.

just hit the switch and stop crying.

I had the same problem with my computer. I ran regclean several time and it seem to clear the problem. Maybe you could try that.

go to run. type: msconfig. Click advanced. Check off "Disable fast shutdown". Run msconfig again. Select "select startup" Uncheck "process config.sys and autoexec.bat" and "load start up group items". Click the startup tab. Select only what you need...this helps the annoying hanging problem but does not completely solve it. MS Windows 98's bells and whistles cause this hang problem as far as I know.

When I took off the sound associated with shutting down in the sound system, it resolved itself.
