Windows98 shuts down during install

I'm trying to install Windows 98 SE on my HP Compaq nc85430. I used to have XP Pro and Ubuntu dual booting but I decided to change it up. I plan to atleast dual boot 98 and XP but that's not what I'm here for.

Up until yesterday I used XP Pro on my laptop everyday, often leaving it on for days at a time. I had overheating problems maybe once or twice every few months(I have a cooling pad for this reason). It was running fairly hot when I tried to install 98 but I eliminated overheating suspicions today by using compressed air and cleaning out a bunch dust. Now it still shuts off randomly but at much more normal temperature.

Basically, I boot the 98 cd and either start the windows setup or start with cd support(to give me a command line) after a few minutes it will shut off. No warning or temporary freeze, just power kills. The laptop is plugged in the entire time although my battery is dead and unplugging the AC immediately kills power. The only real pattern I've noticed is that I'm reading from a Windows 98 each time. I've tried different cd's, a different cd reader(usb dvd to be exact), and playing with bios settings. I wouldn't normally post on a site for IT help but I feel I'm running out of options. Thanks in advance!

Try reducing your ram to 512 or less.
