Windows98 Shortcut Overlays

I am running Windows98 and had installed Tweakui98 Powertools. I wanted to get rid of the arrow on the desktop shortcuts. I ran for about a year with no problem. Suddenly I boot one day and the arrows on all the shortcuts are back. Tweakui is no longer allowing me to select the 'no arrow' option. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Tweakui. I deleted the IsShortcut value from the piffile and lnkfile keys in the HKEY CLASSES ROOT area of the registry. This got rid of the arrows on desktop icons. I cannot get rid of the arrows on Internet Shortcuts - any help in this area is appreciated.

This was caused by a recent Windows Critical Update. I fixed it by using the freeware program Windows Configurator from www.nonags.com. Open the Desktop tab in this program and you will find the option "show arrow on desktop shortcut icons" which is unchecked by default. Check the box, click "Apply, then uncheck the box and click "Apply".

Restore the shell32.dll file from your Win98 cd, Doug. The Security Update of March 7, 2002 installs an updated shell32.dll file that does not support TweakUI's Shortcut overlay options. Using the one from your Win98 CD should get this working again.
