I have been having bootup problems for a while now,the system is ok for a couple of weeks and then suddenly fails to boot entirely. It normally reaches the point at which the systray opens but then hangs, although on other occasions it is just prior to or just after this point. Re-booting between 4-8 times normally gets me in. I have run the obvious scandisks, virus checks & defragged etc and I have also tried selective startups to try an eliminate and identify the problem to no avail.Im running Win'98 SE. with a P3 processor, 320 RAM.
I cant be 100% sure but as far as i can remember the problem first ocurred within a couple of weeks of fitting an internal CD-RW drive, the problem may or may not be related. Any further ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Is the CD-RW connected to the same IDE cable as the hard drive? If it is, change it to the secondary IDE cable. Remember that the drive that is set as master goes to the end connection on the cable and the drive set as slave goes to the other connection on the cable. Read the instrutions that came with your CD-RW writer and set it up just as they tell you too.

Booting into Safe mode is no problem. The problem has subsided again for the time being, this is what happens - it will no doubt appear again in a week or two.....
Thanks all for your advice.
