Subject: Windows(98, ME, XP) reboots at startup
Comment:

I have two systems that continuosly reboot at startup. They were not networked and, until recently, were not in the same location. Both are micron.pc, celeron 700mhz, 128MB of RAM. They shipped with Windows ME and the problem started while runing ME.

I have (1) changed and increased the ram
(2) checked the power supply,(3)checked the fan and run the system with the cover off, (4) reformatted the hard drive and restored from the factory image cd, (5)installed the windows xp upgrade, (6)performed a clean install of Windows 98, (7) flashed the BIOS with the newest version from Micron, (8)run a McAffee Virusscan.

None of this has solved the problem. I can boot Windows 98 in safe mode and the system is stable;however, it won't shutdown and reboots after the shutdown confirmation. I took one system to BestBuy for a hardware diagnostic, but they said I just needed to throw Windows XP on it. I tried that but it did not work. Considering that two virtually identical systems have the same problem, I don't think its a hardware issue. Any ideas?

I love the solution of adding an more software to fix a problem! Anyway....

At what point does it reboot? During splash screen? Just before it gets to the desktop?
Take a look at bootlog.txt and see at what point it stops. That point is the offending entry and we have something to start with.

Feel free to email with additional questions.
