When I tried to enter the Windows Help/Windows98 Memory Troubleshooter list, I selected the 'I don't hear sounds on my program and pressed next.
A blank page appeared. The same appears when I select other apps on the list.
Can someone help me replace the Help Files, if that is the solution to my problem?

Go to start ...find...files....and type Windows help files. There should be a folder with 250 files (9.23MB) If it isn't there you will have to find a download for the folder.

This was removed as part of a Windows security update - mine does the same.
Not quite sure what it was all about now but I believe MS also felt that the 1999 troubleshooter was way out of date and you should visit their website instead.
There are "fixes" around on the internet if you search using Google but I never found one that worked properly.

Thank you Stanley Brady and Derek W for your input.
My Windows Help files have all the CHM. files marked with the question mark(?). I extracted the windows.chm successfully-according to sfc- but the windows.chm files still showed the(?), I guess that wasn't a solution.
Derek W -sounds like I've got to search Google. I guess an an improperly working troubleshooter is better than no program.

The "question mark" is the "Help" icon - that is what you would expect
Can't recall the details, but as mentioned, the Windows help system changed - 'help' files (CHM) are opened with HH.exe and that should be the default association
In the previous system, help files were HLP and were opened with Winhelp.exe (iirc)

I've just looked at notes I saved about this at the time. The only fix that worked was one where you downloaded Win98_TS-fix.zip and ran the troubleshooters from the exe file contained within it.
It brought up all the troubleshooters as one page and worked by temporarily modifying the security registry entries, but only whilst it was being run. This worked fine.
Sounds good BUT around that time I kept tabs on the registry. I decided that if you used it after KB883939 IE6.1 cumulative Update it would be liable (at the best) to undo the security Update, because MS had changed the registry entries yet again.
I no longer hold the registry details but feel, as I did then, that it is risky to go with third party fixes. The troubleshooters are outdated and not worth much anyway - certainly not enough to warrant risking your security or possibly causing some other mess up.
If you regard these troubleshooters as important then be prepared to delve into the registry/security implications in some detail, taking into account the Update state of your machine. It can be done but it requires a good bit of work.

WallyLes, Check out the info at the links below. It's possible that you may have downloaded & installed the 810847: Security Update for Internet Explorer and this may be causing the problem. If this is the case the download at the second link may correct the problem.
February 2003, Cumulative Update for Internet Explorer (810847)
Tufenuf

Just to add, that I checked Tufenuf's link and now realise that I was aware of that. It fixed it at the time but a later update messed it all up again. The third party fix I mentioned came along after that, but before KB883939.
I'm therefore gonna stick with my view in #5 on this one - forget the troubleshooters.

More of the same

Yep, the link in #9 is the one I no longer trust. Just by looking at the Update numbers there is no sign that this fix has been updated for some years. In the meantime there have been many IE Cumulative Updates.
I would avoid it but if you do go for it then it is worth going to Windows Update (before and after) to see if MS reckon you need to update again. In which case it is a vicious cirle - ie you either have the security update or the troubleshooters.

From the suggestions offered me. I checked my update log files and found that the updates responsible for the removal of my troubleshooting help files had been installed on my computer. Since my computer upgrades are installed to date I am going to forget the troubleshooting help on my computer.
However I did manage to solve my initial problem- no sound. My wife's computer is sort of lacking on her upgrades (I keep forgetting), so when the upgrade issue appeared I checked her computer help files and there they were. After printing out the sound troubleshooting steps my sound appeared(reset compression).
I wish to thank all of you who have contributed to my cry for help and wish you all the best.

Not sure we've been that much help on this one but thx for taking the trouble to pop back with the outcome.
