Windows'98 Explorer.exe causing Invalid Page Fault

Hello,

I have a major problem with Windows'98 that
I need to sort out as soon a possible!

Windows '98 no longer boots fully, instead
showing the following requester before the
icons and taskbar usually appear:

"Explorer caused an Invalid Page Fault in
module Explorer.exe at 017f:00401f31"

Now, this has happened to me twice in the
past 3 days - it first happened when I
attempted to remove the 3dfx reference
drivers for my Voodoo 2 card, and revert
to my Creative Labs Voodoo 2 drivers, but
in the process, when asked if I wanted to
keep newer versions of DLL files, I must
have opted to overwrite them with older
versions. :/

The first time this Invalid Page Fault
appeared, I managed to restore my system
by reinstalling Windows '98 from my CD,
by reinstalling over my existing installation
a couple of times, but this did not solve
the problem.

So, I tried installing '98 into a new
directory called "Win98", and that worked
fine, but of course, I would then have to
reinstall all my existing programs again.

So, after a lot of messing about, I decided
to uninstall the new copy of '98 and revert
to my existing installation, but this
Invalid Page Fault still appeared.

I tried a final install of '98 over my
existing installation again, and somehow,
this fixed the problem - Windows '98
started working again.

But, yesterday, I reinstalled my original
Voodoo 2 drivers, but wanted to reinstall
the reference drivers, because a few game
demos were acting funny, i.e. exiting for
no reason... So, I reinstalled the 3dfx
reference drivers, but that didn't seem to
help, so I attempted to remove them again,
but in the process, when Windows asked me
if I wanted to overwrite a couple of existing
DLL files with older versions, I said "Yes"...
I rebooted, and then Windows '98's Explorer
began showing that Invalid Page Fault... :(

I have attempted to reinstall Windows '98
several times today, without success...

Please, I am tearing my hair out with
frustration - and am unable to access my
files via Windows...

The DLL's in question were COMCTL32.DLL
and some DLL to do with Rich Text.

Also, whenever I reinstalled Windows '98,
during Setup updating my system settings,
I kept getting the following errors:

"An error occured loading "c:\windows\system\
shdocvw.dll..."

Also, the same error appears for "shdoc401.dll",
but twice?

If anyone can assist me with my problem, I
will be grateful!

Many thanks,

Jon.

clean re-install is want you need.
If your video card is a pci try moving it to a different slot. Also run Regscan(sic) in the dos. and msconfig in the start/run windows. disabling any drv. that are failing.

Delete explorer.exe, shdocvw.dll, shdoc401.dll and comctl32.dll from windows first (some in windows dir, some in windows/system). The re-install win 98 - voila, a working system??

Have tried everything to eliminate random (but all too frequent) invalid page faults when using windows explorer - always referred back to SHELL32.DLL. No problems with my old, reliable reinstalled File Manager, though. Any ideas, please?

try this:

boot up with your startup disk.

go to c:\windows\system

type:

ren shdocvw.dll shdocvw.old

go to c:\windows\options\cabs

type:

extract /a win98_22.cab shdocvw.dll

copy shdocvw.dll c:\windows\system

if that doesn't work, use the same method to "restore" the original comctl32.dll file

I had the same problem appear last night. Invalid Page Fault in Explorer. I had just changed some network settings and was trying to reboot.
Reinstalling Win98 resulted in an error message during install "unable to install shdocvw.dll & shdoc401.dll" files. Installed copy still has same problem. I will try deleting them first and running the install again and let you know what happens.

Can't get into any files in Win98. PC boots like it is going to let me get into Windows but I get the following error message - "Windows'98 Explorer.exe causing Invalid Page Fault" Prior to this I get the message "illegal operation, computer will shut down." I can't get to any prompt. Do you have any suggestions other that reformatting? I do not have a RESTORE disk. Appreciate any help!
Thanks, Joe

I've been plagued by a similar problem for months. In particular, explorer.exe kept triggering page faults in shdoc401.dll. This happened every time the "new->" command was used on either the menu bar or a right-click popup. I tried refreshing the files in question, re-registering the files, etc.

Then I figured it out today. There was an astoundingly long (about fifty characters!) file extension in the registry (HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT). After removing that, the problem went away.

(Of course! he said while slapping his forehead. The long file extension was overrunning the buffer in shdoc401.dll. Instant page fault during memory access.)

Hope this helps others.
