When I load up WU, my critical updates list has updates for Windows Media Player 7.1 yet I don't have 7.1 on my system, only 6.4. I think I installed 7.1 once but have since removed it completely but obviously WU still thinks I have it. Where does it get it's information from? How does it know what critical updates to suggest. How can I remove the reference to WMP 7.1? Any help appreciated. This is my first post btw! ;)

It may still have a Windows Registry entry hanging around or it still might be around as a Download / Update. Might be worth doing a littls snooping to find it.
Don

The WMP7.1 comes up automatically as windows wants you to upgrade. It's a wise choice not to accept it IMO.
Pasted in from the Langa Newsletter;
Go to Windows Update; select "Personalize" from "Other Options" in the left menu, and activate the "Display the link to the Windows Catalog" option, if you have not already done so. The Catalog will appear in the "See Also" menu on the left. You can then use the Catalog to pull down whatever Updates and Drivers you want. (It also gives you an easy way to see what you've already downloaded.) Items you select go onto a "download basket" from which you can retrieve and place them where ever you want--- on your hard drive, on a CD or whatever--- for safekeeping and later use.
End of paste-----------You can just uncheck the media player elements if I remember correctly. You may have to choose "Download for later installation" or somesuch.
