I got the shock of my life from the microsoft update site. Always keep your computer up to date they say. So i always visit the update site and apply all the patches i find. i saw an update for my network card and updated it. i restarted my computer only to get a shock. The computer told me that a file need to run windows was missing. it referred to a line in system.ini, that a file was missing or corrupt and i had to resinstall or replace this file. windows completed loading on pressing a key, but then i found the network card no longer worked. Because i access the internet through someone else's computer on the network, i couldn't repair the error easily. i got my computer off someone else who didn't give me anyhing in terms of software. i removed the device in device manager restarted the computer and yes it did find it, but only seemed to put the same files back, and so the network card still wasn't working. i wanted to put put the default driver that was dated 1999, but it wasn't stored on the computer in the windows setup files or anywhere else. The computer kept asking me for a third party diskette that i never had. Eventually i solved this problem by going to the manufacturer's website and downloading the file on the network computer. But it all took about two hours and what a shock! Who would have thought that microsoft update site would reccommend an update for your computer that isn't for your computer. It was probably a close match, but not exact. i was absolutely out of my mind with worry, that i had crashed my computer and even though i hadn't i wasn't sure i could fix it. we aren't supposed to be doing this knd of thing with our computers, but i thought it was the right thing to do, to keep the computer up to date. Beware!!

"I got the shock of my life"
You must be extraordinarily timid - computing may not be for you at all
Is this a question? Warning? Anecdote or something else again?
We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

If the un-named file was dated 1999 then chances are it was on your W98SE CD and you could have used sfc from the Run box to restore it (extract one file feature).
Original W98SE files are dated April 23rd 1999.

Yes sometimes you do get the shock of your life.
The reason is explained in below site.
Good but,rather odd sound effects.

Both "Jolting And Revolting" according to the Enquirer (heh)

The obvious soluion is to go into SAFE MODE and remove the offending item from Device Manger and Network Neighbourhood then undertake a Repair Install....

... perhaps the shock overcame all reason (and has had long lasting effects)

Well i didn't mean real shock, more total dispair and dismay. I'm not an IT guy, and no one ever seems to come round to look at them and they are never kept up to date with patches from update site. So you think you're doing everyone a favour by keeping the computers up to date, but its a bit of a shock to see microsoft reccommending an update for your computer that isn't for your computer that then rakes the system down.
The driver was not on the windows 98 cd rom, i tried that. It kept asking for a diskette to be inserted, i changed the location to the win98 cdrom and it wasn't there. thats when i started to sweat buckets. i also did remove it from device manager and restarted the computer and it found the device again and added the latest driver which meant it still wasn't working. when i made it search for a specific driver, well it couldn't find those files, because the sytem had deleted them.

Never mind then - just thought I might be able to unearth an explanation for some part of it.

I repeat my earlier advice - the computer experience seems to be pretty hazardous to your emotional well being - that, or you have a tendency to overdramatize mundane events, or are prone to hyperbole
It sounds as if it's not even your personal machine, but on an office network you decided to fool with - you should leave it to the IT department, you'll probably sleep better (and so will they)
