I have spend hours (days) reviving an old Win 95 computer, found a network card and connected it to my home network. Everything was fine I could share internet and files. Too easy!
UNTIL I DID SOMETHING VERY STUPID!
I thought it spend too long in the box and I catch up with them old security updates from Billy. I enjoyed the fast internet connection and hit the button until the last update (W95wsockupd.exe) caused a fatal error.
It will only start in save mode but I have no idea how to reverse or undo the changes.
Any thought or help is very much appreciated!
Thanks.

Hi wgm, dick, hi everyone, dick, unfortunately, I think the restore solution won't work as it doesn't exist under Win95.
In the same idea as dick's, the Registry is composed of 2 files:
C:\Windows\System.dat
C:\Windows\User.dat
with 2 backups System.da0 and User.da0
- Have a look at the dates of .DA0 to see whether you have a version before your issues
- look through entire disk, for other old versions: System.* and User.* (approximate size)... softwares often save both files before installation!Have a good day,

Hurray!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks a million Dick, Gérard, Terri!!!
The weblink was vital. However the .da0 did not work. (softwares often save... you must be kidding if you think Billy's software does such a thing) Gérard's advice to look for other versions of system.* and user.* was excellent. I had re-installed Norton Utilities the day before which must have created both files *.NU and renaming them worked.
I am very greatful as I honestly thought this question about Win95 will not attract any responses.
But my next question is how do I choose my updates but I will start a new threat!!!!!

Hi wgm, Terri, dick, hi everyone, wgm, thanks for your kind words! I'm very glad you could solve your problem on Computing.Net!
Terri, it's always a great joy to meet you here! ;-) Happy new year 2oo4!
Have a good day,

Hi Frenchie. It's always nice to meet you here too. And a belated Happy New year to you and yours. It is actually a GREAT New Year for me. I got fired from my job on December 29th. Still don't know why. Only thing I can figure is he was paying me too much for too few hours of work (salary position), and firing me was his only way out. Anyway, had 3 other jobs lined up a month eariler, but they talked me out of leaving. Then after being fired I applied one more time to a company I been trying to get my foot in the door for 15 years. Guess what? I got the job. Then I yanked my friend I worked with at the former place out to work with me too, so ya, I'd say it's a great start to a great year. Take care. Drop me a line sometime. New email:
