Hello
I have just brough a secondhand laptop with win98se on it. It works great except I can't download any windows updates. Every time I go to the windows update page I get this message: Internet explorer has encountered an error... then I get this - invalid page fault in kernel32.dll 0167:bff7a138 etc. I used the Toshiba recovery cd which can with the laptop and before installing any other software, I went to the windows update (IE ver 5) but I got the same message. I then installed IE version 6 from a cd and still the same problem. The error message appears when the update first tries to detect what updates I have already got installed on my system. I tried using the IE repair feature but it didn't work. All other pages to the internet work fine and the computer works very well except I can't download any updates.
Thanks
Ford

I'm not sure that the recently revamped Windows Update is compatible with 98 any more (could be wrong of course) but in any event you can bypass that site and go instead to Microsoft's Download Centre (put it in your favourite list):
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/Search.aspx?displaylang=en

Once there, click on 'Windows' in the left-pane headed 'Product Families', then on the next page use the drop-down list to select Windows 98 where it says "Show downloads for.."

Unlike the Windows Update site, however, there's no automatic detection of the updates you need. You'll have to read the details and decide that for yourself, but at least you'll be able to get them here.

Consult your Windows\Windows Update.log file for the last error number. Look that number up on Google or the MS trouble shooter site. Or post the last few lines in here.

Hello
Thanks for your replies. I did try MS troubleshooter but it didn't help. I was able to take the laptop back to where I purchased it and got my money back. I have now purchased another (from another shop) with windows 2000 pro sp4. No problems.
