Comment:

Just recently I changed my the start button on my w98se system to display something different other than start. I heard it could be done and I did it. Now I would like to change the appearance of the windows start up screen and was again told that that can be done. I apparantly need to open my io.sys file with mspaint and I would be able to modify my windows start up screen. This however is not working for me. I get an error message that says the file you are trying to open is not in a bitmap format and therefore cannot be opened. Please help me to find a way to modify my windows start up screen. I am very excited to experiment with this.

Thank you all very much for your answers.
Andrew

The Win98 splash screen is logo.sys. you can use any .bmp image & rename it logo.sys, but it MUST be the exact same size as the original one.

PROCEED WITH CAUTION!

"logo.sys" is the want you might want to experiment with... just make sure you retain the width/height resolution. Also, consider that there is a "wiping stripe" at the bottom.

Then, IF you're successful in creating a new Start Upscreen, you're ready to attempt the "Please wait while your computer shuts down"... that's "logow.sys" in C:\Windows, then if you STILL want to pursue this, you can create a new "It's now safe to turn off your computer" - that one is "logos.sys" in C:\Windows.

Remember, I did not advise you to do this. At the very least, make a copy or re-name the original files so you can re-trace your steps.

You might want to consider some free ready-made alternatives, for free, off the Internet. A simple search should bring up a number of sites that have them available, in a variety of themes.

The startup screen can either be imbeded in io.sys (like you mentioned) or a c:\logo.sys file (which takes precence if there).

I would really like to thank all of you who helped, but I still have one little hang up. I have found the two shut down screens, but still cannot find the start up or splash screen. I have gone to start/find and typed in "logo", but only came up with two .sys files, both shut down screens. Where oh where will I find the start up screen, Please

By the way, there is no "logo.sys" per se on your hard drive to replace. It is a default file embedded in the IO.sys program that is used if it cannot find one on your drive.
