I have many programs that begin when I start up my computer. I don't know what half of them are. What is a good program to use to clean up my Start Up so all these programs do not automatically load?

I don't use them myself, but there are a number of programs out there for this. Startup Cop being one I remember hearing about. Try a Google search for "Win98 startup control" or something similar. Below is a ~large~ listing of programs with suggestions as to whether it's safe or not to disable them. The FULL listing is gained via the link in the first sentance on the page.

In the Run dialog box from Start type msconfig OK then under the Start Up Tab select the programs you do not wish to start at boot by unchecking the check boxes.

To ease your mind a bit. None of those programs in the msconfig Startup tab are absolutely necessary to run your system. So you can deselect any of them without worrying about causing a catastrophe. But some of them are very desirable so use the list at the site that Dan Penny suggested to help you determine which ones to deselect.

I agree with #3 but keep ScanRegistry ticked.

Otherwise if anything goes wrong with the registry Windows will not be able to help you out.
