The link did not help. Thanks for trying....Recently, while running windows 98 for about an hour or so the following message pops-up on my screen: Windows socket error: (10055), on API 'connect' After it appears I cannot connect to the internet. All activities invovling a connection with the net are disabled. Can someone please help me!!! My e-mail is cabuchoma@yahoo.com

tHe MaChiNe,
What OS are you running, and how much memory does your pc have?
This error may indicate a shortage of resources on your system. It can occur if you're trying to run too many applications (of any kind) simultaneously on your machine.
If this tends to occur after running certain applications for a while, it might be a symptom of an application that doesn't return system resources (like memory) properly.
It may also indicate an application not closing properly.
If the problem persists, exit Windows or reboot your machine to remedy the problem.

FZWG, im running on windows 98 and my computer has 160 RAMs of memory. Rebooting will not, because the message pops-up everytime my computer is on for 1 hour and 17 minutes....do u have a solution???

Also, consider using System Monitor (Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Monitor) Memory Manager to check out memory use for a while.

What is the value for the following Registry key in your pc?
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControl\ SetServices\VxD\MSTCP\MaxConnections

Hi All
Just a thought - I am suffering same "Socket Error" messages and also "Invalid Page Faults" on Grokster....all on a Duron 1.2Ghz, which I've recently done a clean install of 98SE on....is it possible my RAM is Kaput, or more likely my memory settings....at least you know you aren't alone - tHe MaChiNe!
FZWG - I can trace the registry folder you refer to...but there is no 'max connections'???

If it is not there, to the Registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP
add the value MaxConnections, with a value data of 256. This modification specifies/increases the number of concurrent connections and may cause the 10055 error to disappear. To do this, the Registry is edited. However, before you modify the registry, make sure to back it up and that you understand how to restore the registry if a problem occurs!!!!!!!
-Go to Start>Run, and enter regedit in the 'Open' box, click OK
-In the Registry Editor Window, select the key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\VxD\MSTCP
(Go to: (+)HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, and expand by clicking on the (+), then expand (+)System, then expand(+)CurrentControl Set, then expand (+)VxD)
When you see MSTCP, highlight, right click, and select New>String Value from the drop down menus.
On the New Value that appears on the right side pane, type in: MaxConnections
Highlight the Value MaxConnections, right click, and select Modify.
In the Edit String prompt, the Value Name: MaxConnections appears, and below it Value Data. Enter 256 and click OK
Exit the Registry Editor, and Restart PC.

THANKS FZWG for the help!!! I gonna try this out....relic we will fight this together.....!!! FZWG, I've done the exact same thing you have told me to do, but I was told to put in the value "400"....maybe 256 will work...thanks again for your immense support...

tHe MaChiNe,
The value is something for which you may get different recommendations. Have seen 1024 and even higher. The default, believe it or not, is 100.Hope something works for you.

FZWG....I would like to thank u once more for ur extraordinary help...u r superly smart..!!(is that even a word?)....I changed the value to 256....i restarted my computer and 1 hr and 17 mins later, boom!!! the same message popped up again....so far I've tried 400, 300, 256, and I've also mad it a DWord...that didn't go well...do u have any suggestions??? PLEASE HELP ME!!!!

tHe MaChiNe,
At this point in time, I'd go for broke and enter a value of 1024.
You mentioned a DWord. The MaxConnections is a String data type, not a DWord.
If the value of 1024 does not work, suggest you get some more brainpower to help with the problem.
Try the following link:
http://forums.techguy.org/
Register and post you problem under the Web category, etc.Good luck.

Before you throw in the towel, two things come to mind.
1. Have you run System File Checker to see if you have a duplicate or damaged Winsock file.
2. Have you run your Antivirus program to insure something else is not lurking in the background? Trend Micro has a program called HouseCall which does an on-line scan. It is free.

FZWG....I changed the value to 1024 and it had no effect...and I also ran the System File Checker and checked winsock and the results were fine...nothing damaged....My friend suggested that I rename c:\windows to c:\oldwin and c:\progra~1 to c:\oldprogs, and install windows 98 in this directory: c:\win98.....he said this should solve my problem, and this will help me find out what was wrong with my computer....

Hi
Reviewing previous links I ran the dos command mentioned at the link below which showed I have only about 12 open connections
http://www.proxyplus.cz/faq/articles/EN/art10002.htm
I think I've now reduced my probs down to a hardware resources setting error - I've reinstalled and fiddled settings (can't remember what - not good I know) - but now all I'm left with is that annoying 'illegal page fault', ironically I can keep using grokster fine as long as I don't touch the error msg window.
Goodluck tHe MaChiNe - like everything it's normally the smallest thing.....

tHe MaChiNe,
Before doing a reinstall, (if it is not too late), if TCP/IP is installed on your computer, try uninstalling TCP/IP and then reinstalling and reconfiguring it.
To uninstall TCP/IP:
- Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network icon.
- Click a component on the Configuration tab, click Properties, and then record all of the component's settings. Repeat this process until you have recorded the configuration information for all of your components.
-Remove all TCP/IP-related network components from network properties. To do so, click a component on the Configuration tab, and then click Remove. Repeat this process until all of the TCP/IP-related network components are deleted from network properties, click OK, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer (if you are not prompted to restart the computer, then do so manually). To reinstall and configure TCP/IP:
-Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Network.
-On the Configuration tab, click Add, click Protocol, and then click Add.
-In the Manufacturers box, click Microsoft, in the Network Protocols box, click TCP/IP, and then click OK.
-Click OK, and then click Yes when you are prompted to restart your computer (if you are not prompted to restart your computer, then do so manually). The W98 reinstall may or may not fix your problems. During the reinstall you will get prompts stating a file is newer than the one you are trying to install. Normally you keep the most recent existing files. However, if one of these files is corrupt, though, your problems will remain.
If you decide to go for the reinstall, click Start>Run, type in MSCONFIG, then click OK, and go to Startup. Uncheck and disable everything, except EXPLORER and SYSTRAY, then click Apply and OK. This should prevent any unnecessary programs from loading and running in the background during the Windows reinstall.
Also, it is my understanding Windows 98 and 98 SE do not write over dlls nor do they rewrite the registry. Consequently corrupted dlls are not overwritten and if you have a registry problem it will still be there after the reinstallation.
If the reinstall does not fix the problem, you may have to format and do a fresh install.

FZWG...u proved a point....u have a great idea...i didn't re-install windows, i just tried what u said to do...ur idea seems like it will work....the weird thing is when i deleted the TCP/IP stuff....a similar message like the Windows socket error popped up....I can't remember exactly what it said, but it said something about not making a connection...I'm not sure....We'll when I added back the TCP/IP stuff everything looked good so far...I hope ur idea will work.....I'm waiting for the results....again, thanks a million bro...ur a superstar!!

Stick with it, man.
Hope it all works out for you. Sometimes we just have to keep trying stuff until we bulls eye whatever it is.

I did it and I got nothing....still the same old message.....but now when I'm on the net and i click on a link that opens in a new window...my computer crashes....and when I turn my CDR-W on, the screen turns blue and i get some kind of a message(I HAVE AN EXTERNAL CDR-W)....I guess the only way to solve this problem is to re-format my harddrive or buy a new computer....I guess I have to say good-bye to BIG BERTHA.....and thanks again bro....you've been great help!
