Comment:

I have an Abit NF7 mobo with an AMD 2000+ processor, and a Geforce 3 gfx card.

It started off in photoshop, the system shut down after it tried performing a gfx heavy task. The computer shut off and then a two tone siren was played untill I cut the power from the back.

It started off only doing it in photoshop and then it started to do it a few minutes after getting into windows, always the siren playing after every crash. Soon after it would do it before even getting to windows, and now I get no siren at all, but a Windows Protection Error right before windows loads, it flashes a blue screen and restarts automatically.

I've unplugged everything but the HD and I've tried replacing the power supply but the problem stayed the same. I've tried alternating between 1 RAM stick at a time to see if one was bad, but no luck.

If anyone can please help me with this I would be greatly appreciative, I can't figure out whats going on with this thing.

The siren sound indicates that the processor is overheating. If you were to look at the heatsink, you will likely find that it is clogged with dust. Remove the fan and clean out the dust using a brush or compressed air. Do not use a vacuum cleaner as these can cause static damage. Also check that the cpu fan operates correctly.

Besides only checking for dust, you also want to make sure that the heat sink is mounted properly and with the right amount of thermal paste. (a "rice grain" amount, spread evenly over the die so that it forms a very thin film).

Do the same thing for the heatsink after cleaning the surface very well...do not touch this surface with your fingertips as this can cause improper heat transfer and those dreaded sirens.

I have an NF7-S2 and I had the same problem until I checked the thermal paste, and I removed my heatsink, polished it with lint free chalk and reattached. Problem disappeared.

Cleaned everything as soon as the problem started, I can check the CPU temp from bios and its at 40-45 C. I dont have a good layer of thermal paste on, so I'll try that next.

Tried it out, CPU runs at 30ºC and the mobo runs at 20ºC, still got the protection error though and I can't make it to windows.

That's a bit of an improvement!

It's very likely that a file saved to the hard drive was corrupted by the overheated processor or part saved during a crash. Is there any indication of which file is misbehaving?

Have you tried booting into safe mode?

I try to boot into safe mode but I still get the same error. I could check to see what the last file it loads is. I'll try putting a different HD in there and see if that works.
