When I turn on my computer it says:
"Windows protection error. You need to restart your computer."
I can get into safe mode but have no idea how to get the main windows running again. I have the Windows CD.
Any ideas?

OK so:
"To resolve this issue, remove or rename the Win.com file in the root folder, and then restart your computer. If you have an earlier version of Windows installed on your computer and there is no Win.com file in the folder for that version of Windows, move the Win.com file from the root folder to the folder containing the earlier version of Windows."
I deleted the win.com file and now when booting up it says:
"The following file is missing or corrupted: win.com
Cannot find win.com, unable to continue loading Windows."
??

Yes, rename would have been a better choice than delete
"Windows Protection Errors can occur due to many different causes... "
You picked one possible solution - doesn't seem like that was it
If you get people asking the wrong questions, you don't have to worry about the answers

Windows Protection Error usually means your RAM is faulty.
Test your RAM with memtester x86
computing.net rocks

Really? That wouldn't be my first guess.
Windows Protection error messages can occur under any of the following conditions:
• If a real-mode driver and a protected-mode driver are in conflict.
• If the registry is damaged.
• If either the Win.com file or the Command.com file are infected with a virus, or if either of the files are damaged.
• If a protected-mode driver is loaded from the System.ini file and the driver is already initialized.
• If there is a physical input/output (I/O) address conflict or a random access memory (RAM) address conflict. If you get people asking the wrong questions, you don't have to worry about the answers
