Hi Ronny.
Try starting in safe mode, then run Scandisk and see what happens. You can also run scandisk from the startup disk in dos.
Have a nice day.

Its the Error for Basic Input Output devices
Try changing memory modules.., most probably its because of FAulty RAMcheers
Ronald

windows 95 has an issue with AMD cpus faster than 350 MHz.
You're much better off using Win98se. Much better USB support and it looks nicer. If you really want to use win 95c, then get the patch for this at: http://download.microsoft.com/download/win95upg/patch/1.2/w95/en-us/amdk6upd.exe

Hi,
I am getting the same error on a new install of Win98. The machine had lost it's power supply (actually had flames) It took out my hard-drive and CD-rom drive. I am replacing them now - but get this Protection error everytime after bootup. I tend to think what Ron had to say makes sense. I can install the hard drive and CDROM, but whenever I go to initiate Window's First Run I get the protection error- and maybe the PS had corrupted the RAM or Motherboard in some way?
Microsoft has a couple suggestions: Try renaming SmartDrv.exe OR add Device = c:\windows\emm386.exe noems to the config.sys
... I am going to try some other RAM chips and see if it helps - Good Luck!

Hi again,
Just a follow up. It was the RAM chips creating this problem. After I replaced the bank and reloaded the OS - worked like a charm ... and this is after actual flames were coming out of the PS .. lost some hardware but I am back online now...
....Thanks Rono or Ronald... everyone! Good Luck!
