After initiating shutdown I get the following on a blank screen.
windows protection error. restart windows
press any key top continue.
pressing any key causeds the computer to turn off. This is a pain

i think you should reinstall your current windows.. if it's still the same .. try to delete the windows directory .. then install windows.. make sure you've save all your work to d: or other drives... if it still not works.. format your PC and install windows again... if it stil look the same.. why not you just throw your PC away.. have a try..buddy...

This is a software based problem with one of the programs you have in resident memory. I had the same problem with Norton Anti-Virus on a IBM Aptiva 245. I found the culprit by removing each resident memory program, one at a time and shutting down windows each time.
Perform a "cntrl-alt-del", then highlight the resident application and select "end Task". This will remove it from resident memory. Then shut down windows to see if the error is still active. Do this individually with each resident program and chances are that you too will find the culprit.

SYMPTOMS

- Your computer may stop responding (hang) while displaying the "Windows is
Shutting Down" message.
CAUSE

This issue can occur if you are running a McAfee or Norton anti-virus
program
that is configured to scan your floppy disk drive when you shut down your
computer.
RESOLUTION
==========
To resolve this issue, contact the manufacturer of your anti-virus program
to
inquire about the availability of a fix for this issue.
To work around this issue, configure your anti-virus program to not scan
floppy
disk drives when you shut down your computer. For information about how to
do
so, view the documentation included with your anti-virus program, or contact
the
manufacturer of your anti-virus program.
