I have a k6-2 233 laptop and recently reformatted the hard drive and installed Win98 Second Edition. On the first boot after installation it came up with the error: Windows Protection Error. You need to restart your computer. C:\Windows\system\vmm32.vxd: Missing/unable to load.
I can boot up in DOS or safemode and have verified that the file is present and uncorrupted.
Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.
If you have a umax scanner, and it's loading in system.ini you will receive this message... In System.ini disable line referring to umaxis11.386 Place Semi-colon begginning of line to disable. Then Reboot
after hearing from people with similar problems and discovering that the solution i found seems to work for all of them, i thought i'd post the fix: on booting get into dos (probably f8 or another f-number and then select command promt mode). then type scandisk. this should work but if you get a bad command or file name then type cd.. then press return until you get to the c:\ directory and then type cd windows\command and press return. then type scandisk and this will definitely work. after i ran scandisk my problem was fixed. i hope this is a help.
