I'm running Win98. I installed a 6.4 gig hard drive as a master and a 2.1 gig as a slave. in FDISK and CMOS they are listed as full drives. When I load Windows 98 it reads them as 2.0 gig each. They appear to be working, everything is running good. I don't know why windows is saying they are only 2 gig??? Please help. Thanks. Darlene

Darlene, Run fdisk from boot floppy, type y for large HD support, 4 for details. The partition size should be full size of drive, type should be FAT32, and usage should be 100%. If not, you did not enable large HD support when you partitioned, and got FAT16 which is limited to 2mb. Al

CONVERT YOUR SYSTEM TO FAT 32 Windows software only recognizes 1.99 gigs at 16 bit so even if you have a 20 gig, it will only show as a 1.99 (unless you convert to FAT32) Back in the good ole days, DOS only recognized a top size of 540 megabytes... later, enhanced controllers such as an EIDE were developed to handle drives up over 540 and up to 2.2 gigs. Now-a-days most controllers are built onto the board and can handle any size drive up to a max of 25 gigs (will still only show it at 1.99 gigs, unless converting to FAT32) There is a "fix" for windows operating systems in the microsoft update area for drives over 30 gigs because anything over that , the "formatting software" shows bad clusters on a new drive after 965,000 clusters. Al is right about the 32 FAT.. your system will run a hell of a lot faster with the 32 bit FAT system and considering that WIN95 and WIN98 ARE 32 bit operating systems, you would think that you would want your hard drive to be able to keep up with your software.
