windows not recognizing cd drive

after i defraged my hard drive windows did not recognize my cd drive anymore but it is in the list of drives in my bios. do i reinstall windows or is it something in the configs. need help please

check Device Manager for any yellow exclamation points on your CD-ROM drive or controllers.

Remove the cd in Device Mangler and reboot. If that doesn't work, post back to this thread.

I had this problem in Win98se.
Go to CDROM in Device Manager and uncheck the boxes that say 'Auto Insert Notification' and 'DMA', then reboot.
