I don't think there is but why would you want it to. WMP 11 is full of DRM BS.

Plus there's better (and free/non-DRM) media players out there than WMP11. Most should work with Win98...

VLC
MPlayer
The KMPlayer

...just to name a few.

No. It requires code not found in that system, and to even begin on working it is something I am not prepared to learn about.

Is there any way with the Windows 9x platform or 2000, to load a virtual machine program that will allow Windows Media Player 11 to run in it's own protected environment? Because I want to join Netflix and download movies, but they informed me I would have to use Windows Media Player 11.

I have 2 gigs of memory and a 2.5 gigahertz processor, and it's an ASUS A8S-X motherboard.

Thanks.

The paragraph below is from the Netflix site. Give the requirements. You can't ues it with Win98.

What are the system requirements to watch movies instantly on my PC?
You must have a computer running Windows XP with Service Pack 2 or higher, or Windows Vista; Internet Explorer version 6 or higher; Windows Media Player version 11 or higher; an active broadband connection to the Internet; 1.0 GHz processor; 512 MB RAM; 3 GB free hard disk drive space.

Also - Windows Media Player 11 conflicts with most older versions of CD and DVD burning software.

Running Win98 you wouldn't have a quality experience viewing the files anyway. One other thing would be file size. FAT32 has a limit of 4GB and the DLoads may be larger than that.

How do you get Windows 98 running in 2GB of RAM? I am pretty sure that Win 98 can only handle 512MB.

bellham you edit the vcache settings in System.ini (under the 386 enhanced section if I remember) to read maxvcachesize=524288. (it's along those lines)

This limits the vcache to 512meg of ram which is what causes the system to crash as it gets confused (sort of anyway) and thinks it's run out of space.

Anyway WMP cannot work on 98SE at all and never will officially, so your only option is to upgrade I'm afraid. Or dual boot XP and 98SE. The last officially supported version for 98ME was V9.

As far as I know emulation was only ever done for the NT line of Microsoft systems as with VMWare. I mean think of it why would people have emulated a DOS comp on Win9x since there all ready running it:P.

Re #9.

The exact syntax is:

MaxFileCache=524288

This is under the [vcache] heading in the system.ini file. It can be edited in Notepad.

It's OK if it is slightly less, but more than this causes problems in W98SE. You will still get full use of your RAM. Only its cache will be reduced and 524288 is more than enough. I used to have mine set at MaxFileCache=393216 long story...

...some other bloke...

Thanks Derek I couldn't remember the exact syntax as it's been awhile since I used it.

"The last officially supported version for 98ME was V9."

That is entirely correct, although WMP10 has been (unoficially but legally) hacked and packaged to work on Windows 98. So making WMP11 work probably wouldn't be completely impossible - though I'd agree that there wouldn't be much point.
