Hi,

I downloaded windows media player 9 yesterday, and when i try to install it, it says: This version of Windows Media Player can be installed only on Windows 98 second Edition, Windows Millennium Edition, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows .Net Server

Great, they didn't say on their site you must have te 2nd edition of windows 98! There only stood windows 98 version. I have the first version. I also have te windows 98 second edition on a CD, but i want to know what is the difference between WIndows 98 1st version and 2nd version? Is the 2nd version SE? and what is that special about that edition?

Thanks for helping me.

My understanding is Win98se is a stable reliable OS. I have it. Got fed up with 98 crashing and locking up. Suggest you install se. You won't regret it. Hope this helps.
Cheers.

Except for the shutdown problem (which can be fixed with a patch) 98SE is, in my opinion, a big improvement over 98. Install it if you have it.

Here is a suggested solution that may allow you to install media player 9 on Windows 98, the first edition.

"you need WinRar to open mpsetup.exe and extract the contents to a folder.

than in regedit i made windows 98 look like windows 98 se.

in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion i modified VersionNumber to the value "4.10.2222" then Version to the value "Windows 98se" and ProductName to the value "Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition"

than run wmplayer.exe from the directory that you extracted it to. and it i should give you some stupid error at 100 percent but it would be installed by then and should work.

i hope this works. i used the beta version 9.00.00.2926. i have used it for a week now and no problems so just as i thought fe is compatible but ms is just greedy."

Quoted from steelydoubt, thanks again mate!!!

If this works, I will become most disappointed at microsoft for no other reason that they are using this to ensure we all upgrade.

To disable an operating system (that we payed alot of money to them for) from being upgraded for the sake of planned obselesonce is WRONG and un MORAL.

Sure, they could announce they no longer offer support for the program on Win98fe but to stop it from installing even though it will run if allowed, sucks.

Win98 ain't that different from Win98se. So there is no compatability problem.

For your info Microsoft, older computers can't power your new OS's. My newer Computers have your flashy WinXP but my old one can't handle the overheads. If you made a new OS that it could manage I would upgrade, but currently I have no option but for it to keep Win98 on it.

And anyway since when is an OS that could be purchased just 4 years agao considered so old you no longer wished it existed.

Note to ones-self, WinXP will be unsupported by the year 2006. Thanks for clearing that up.

Sorry about the rant. Oh, Windows 98SE will be next! A shame since its still considered one of the best OS's Microsoft produced for older model computers.

It worked, I tried it and it works of the final release version!!!! ;)

You can also use winzip to extract the files.

Open your registry by selecting, Start, Run, then type- regedit

Then you can follow the above guide.

When you have finished editing the registry,

double click on- wm_setup.exe
in the extracted folder to install. Not wmplayer.exe as mentioned above.
