I have a Dell laptop that came installed with Windows Me, it's been having so many problems lately that I'm just sick of it. The computer is about 2 years old and the orginal Me CD was broken in a move. I have copy of Windows 98 which I've ran before and had no problems with. How can I go from Me to Windows 98?
Thanks

Have you looked at the Instal Guides link at the left? or even done a search of the forum. This question has probably been answered dozens of times.

My question is...the windows 98 cd I have is actually an upgrade cd. I'm going BACK from windows Me to Windows 98. It's harder than just doing a clean install. I know because I did it about 2 years ago on another computer I had. It took me about 4 hours or more to figure it out. I've forgotten how I did it and back then I didnt' have access to a site like this. I need to know the DOS commands to wipe the hard drive and all that good stuff.

Wipeing the hard drive is easy. Boot from a win98 floppy and type
format c:
But the first thing that you should do is make sure that you can access your cdrom drive after booting from a floppy.
That is most likley the problem you ran into last time.

Sorry about that. Does the laptop have a floppy drive? If so then you can use a 98 bootdisk to FDISK and/or format your drive.
The other problem you face is if your 98 CD is an Upgrade disk then you need a qualifying prior version of windows in order to instal 98. I'm not sure about earlier versions of upgrade disks but with XP upgrade disks you can do a Clean instal just by inserting your previous ME/98 CD when prompted to confirm ownership of qualifying product. ME would not qualify anyway as it is not a "Prior" version. Since the laptop came with ME installed it isn't possible to uninstal and revert to earlier OS because there was no earlier system installed. You have to format and do a clean instal. Unless you can get around the lack of a qualifying earlier product you cannot instal from your 98 Upgrade CD.

This is Windows 98 Second Edition. It didnt come with a floppy....so unless they messed up at the factory....there is no such thing. To go backwords isnt as easy just doing a clean install. If it was, I wouldnt have asked. Some one please HELP.

Richard. thank your for the good information. This only came with a cd not a floppy. I do appreciate your information though. I am going to see what I can do about not having a prior version. Thank you

Your best bet is to create a bootable CD on another system. Add the win98 folder from your CD to it. You can boot from the CD and format the hard drive. Then run setup from the win98 folder on the CD.
As Richard said, you will need proof of ownership of a prior system, like win95 or win3.1.
