Hello..I have Windows 98 and it will lock up every time imediately after the desktop loads...The computer will start in safe mode without any problems..The only hardware installed is the mouse..monitor..keyboard..modem..ethernet card....I even installed a new hard drive and installed Windows 98 on it..Again with the new hard drive and a clean install of windows 98 the computer will lock up in normal mode but will start in safe mode...Anyone have any suggestions...Thanks...

RAM may be playing up... '98 is a little picky about RAM - specs., quality etc.. RAM does not always last forever...

If two or more sticks instaled reduce a single - min 0f 32MEg... and see what happens...

If single 128Meg stick instaled... then beg/borrow/s...l a known good stick (min 32Meg) and see what happens?

Try cleaning RAM edge connectors with a pencil eraser, then pop RAM in and out a few times to clear any tarnish off the sockets. You can download a memory test from www.docmemory.com which you use to create a boot floppy on another machine.

When you go to Device Manager are there any errors showing?

Assuming RAM is OK, narrow things down by removing all hardware not essential to boot, inc modem, ethernet card (and CD drives too if still connected).

On the basis of what you've done so far software seems unlikely but there's nothing lost by typing msconfig in the Run box then temporarily unticking everything except ScanRegistry - just to see if it proves anything.

Go into msconfig, turn off all startup items and also set your display to adapter defaults, then reboot normally and let us know if it still locks up.

If two devices try to use the same IRQ, this can cause a conflict.

Physically remove the modem, or the ethernet card.
You say you can boot in safe mode.

Which ever one you remove also uninstall
it in the device manager then reboot.

We took the ram out and cleaned it..removed all hardware modem..ethernet card and disconnected the CD drive..We went to msconfig and unchecked all except Systray and the computer still locks up...I should mention that when I did the clean install on the new hard drive after the computer rebooted for the last time a window appeared stating it was looking for a driver for the monitor and then the computer locks up at this time with that window on the screen how ever it will start in safe mode...Thanks again for all your help..

Did you set the display to adapter default?

Also from msconfig try these steps:

On the General tab, click Selective Startup, and then click to clear all the check boxes below:

• Process Config.sys File
• Process Autoexec.bat File
• Process Winstart.bat File (if available)
• Process System.ini File
• Process Win.ini File
• Load Startup Group Items

Click OK, and then restart your computer when you are prompted to do so.

Ah... you mention a display driver message in normal-mode boot-up...?

If it is looking for one for the installed vga card..., can't find it - and thus it stops/locks-up? You may/will need to provide it separately via a floppy or CD etc.? I seem to recall you can do this via safe-mode - but its been a while...

Also some (all) vga cards have have a CD installation routine that will install the driver(s) for you? Again can be done via safe-mode?

Sure sounding like a display driver issue (monitor drivers are not usually important).

What display card are you using, or is it inbuilt on the mobo? BIOS settings might be of interest.

As an aside, it is a fallacy that SytemTray is super-important (despite it often being said on websites). I don't have mine invoked. ScanRegistry is more important as it creates your backups.

Hey I appreciate all your help but I had to get away from it for a while driving me nuttier than I am...The display card is built in..I put the original hard drive back in ..Every thing will load including all the startup items and the icons appear next to the time and then it just locks up after that point..I have played around with the bios on other computers but do not know much about it...I am sure from the sound of things and your expertise you could have the problem solved in a short time if you had the computer but I am going to give up for now..Just want to say thanks again for all you did..

OK, when you are ready then.

Just in case you pop back I wonder if you are lacking chipset drivers. I'm not too familiar with IBM's but with some machines they have drivers built into a special section on the HD, so maybe you no longer have them now it's been replaced.

If you identify your machine fully it is possible that you can download them.

Do you know where I could get the chip set drivers..I was able to get to device manager in normal mode while the start items were still loading in the task bar and there were no question marks or exclamation marks.. Of course the computer locked up once all the icons were loaded in the task bar...There are two items listed in device manager while in safe mode listed under other devices..They are microsoft wheel mouse and PCi ethernet controller..All cards are removed from the computer including the ethernet card..Not sure if this helps in any way just wanted you to know..Thanks again

I've just re-read your original post. Seems this problem was there on a previous HD so I no longer think my thoughts in #12 apply.

I'm now a bit lost. Answers to below "might" help:

1. Are you sure the message said monitor drivers and not display drivers or video drivers?

2. What was the background to all this? Was the machine working OK originally and this suddenly happened? If so, can you recall what you might have been doing before it went wonky?

3. In Device Manager what does it say against Display Adapters?

With the old hard drive installed Windows will completely load and the desk top will load along with all the startup items and icons...Once the desk top and all icons have loaded the computer locks up at this time...With the new hard drive installed the computer will load to a point where a small window appears that states (windows has found new hardware Visual Sensation VS-7E)..Then another window appears stating wizard searching for drivers Plug and Play monitor..It is at this time the computer will lock up..The background screen is green. In device manager under Display Adapters it list(standard PCI graphics adapter VGA)..Both hard drives will load ok in safe mode..This machine gradually starting locking up a few weeks ago and it became more frequet until it locks up now at every startup..Could the mother board be the culprit?? Thanks again I hope this explains a little better..

I can think of only two reasons for this, either the display adapter hardware itself or the display drivers (software).

Take a look inside the board where the monitor signal cable plugs in. See if the socket is attached to a plug-in circuit card or inbuilt (soldered) onto the board.

If it is a hardware fault (I'm now beginning to think in that direction) then an add-on card can obviously be replaced. If it is built-in then mobo replacement is the only way forward.

Drivers for the motherboard are usually supplied for the complete chipset. In which case it is a matter of searching around using whatever number you can find on the mobo. A separate card will have it's own number and you then search for its display drivers.

You could always try Removing the Display Driver entry while in Safe Mode then rebooting. The system should find the drivers (new hardware). I think it is far too hopeful bearing in mind all you've done but there is nothing much lost by trying.

Kevin I would like to say thanks one more time for all the effert and help you gave me with this computer..You explain stuff so it is easily understood and take a step by step approach...If I ever need any help with another computer I hope you are the one that answers my post...The computer is at the curb...Tomorrrow is trash day...I kinda believe it's a hardware problem also and the monitor signal cable is built into the board..Thanks again for all your time and help..
