I use this pc to play music to my reciever, chat on msn and sometimes schoolwork. Usually I will have one or 2 msn conversation windows open, WMP 9, and word or wordperfect depending on what im doing. For some reason whenever i minimize or maximize a window or someone sends me an instant message the music will lag and so will the mouse. Any ideas? I just reinstalled windows last week and have avg 7.5 installed and have done scans. Also have checked for spyware although I find it highly unlikely.

Thanks in advance.

Just a thought, could it be that a celery 466 isn't as fast as the modern processors that the software you are running was designed for?

It may help to use some less bloated software to do the tasks you want. Irfanview is a lightweight package than can handle your music (with plugins). Trillian and Gaim are alternatives to MSN Messenger, I'm not sure on the resource usage, but suspect them to be lower.

I don't like irfanview for playing mp3's. I prefer wmp 9 because it automatically organizes my music library.

I would suggest the last version of the "old" Winamps, 2.95 - it has a library and is nowhere near as bloated as WMP9!

Install Cacheman 5.50 and minimize it to tray. You will notice that lagging is closely related to RAM being used until you get to increase the swap file on hard drive.

There is nothing wrong with swapping to hard drive if there is no more RAM to accomodate multitasking but this is why the overall performance will be lowered. The hard drive is a much slower device than RAM.

You may improve the situation by adding a 128 MB RAM stick PC 100 or PC 133.

If you ever get a computer with a Celeron in the range of 3.33 GHz with 768 or 1000 MB RAM(or 1 GB RAM)) you will notice that multitasking is easily done and closely related to hardware even if in this case Celeron is often judged as a second choice by many computer users.Good luck.

Simply stop using media player 9 would be my choice and use Winamp 2.9X range as some one said earlier. But on the hardware side an extra 128 or 256 meg of ram will make the difference.

I have tried the irfanview but then I tried the winamp idea and it worked pretty well. Its equalizer is pretty decent. And as for putting more ram in, I'll see what I can grab used at the store.

Celeron 466 was introduced 466MHz on 4/26/1999. A Microsoft media player from that time would be WMP 7.0 or 6.4 (although 6.4 is a legacy release and is getting a little long in the tooth.)

It shouldn't actually be too bad, I'm running WMP 9 on a Pentium II 300Mhz laptop with 160MB RAM and it's fine. But then I'm guessing that the PII has much better performance than faster Celerons??

Having said that, I most definitely use Winamp 2.95, in fact, I still use this Winamp version on my AMD 3200+ 64 machine! I don't think IrfanView can be taken seriously as a music/video player, but a top image viewer.

Yes WMP71 might do better and this also has a play list.

Also type msconfig in the Run box and see what is running in the background. Sometimes there are programs that can be set to run from a shortcut rather than running all the time whether you need them or not.

This might help you decide which are which:
STARTUP ITEMS

Where possible it is best to disable them from their own icons (often in the system tray next to the clock) but otherwise they can be unticked in msconfig.

Doesn't look too bad. It was ertainly a good idea to untick that MS Office stuff - it eats up resources.

In fact it is safe to "temporarily" untick anything (as long as you take note of what you did) except ScanRegistry. Without this you get no registry backups. Even SystemTray doesn't matter that much (despite a common myth about it on many websites). Not that it will help your situation though.

I presume you have need for mmtask (everyones requirements are different).

Other good things to do are clearing Temporary Internet Files and defrag from time to time.
