when i am reinstalling windows off the cd, after i have selected "start windows setup from cd", it installs the cd rom drive and dos managers, and then just sits there saying: "scanning PCI bus using mechanism #2"

thats it. it just stops.

i hope you can help, Loz
(btw, i am using the install guide off of www.windowsreinstall.com)

The standard windows bootdisk loads a bunch of drivers most computer don't need in order to install windows. On several occassions I've had that problem and had to edit config.sys to disable the loading of those drivers.

If you're already using a bootdisk and having that problem I can email you a stripped down bootdisk file that should work.

well, the reason i am reinstalling is because i keep on getting "blue screen of death" errors and it tends to crash alot. however, i do have a full install of win98 on the system and it will boot in and i can use it for a while.

if i have a full install do i need a boot disk? (i havent been using one)

i hope this helps, Loz

I think when booting from the cdrom the same drivers get loaded as when you're using a bootdisk. Out of habit I alway install using a bootdisk so I can't be sure.

Since you're getting the errors when booting from the cdrom, try a regular bootdisk just to see if that makes a difference. I can always email you the stripped down disk if you want it.

Another thing to check is to make sure that any virus protection is disabled in cmos. That causes installation problems also.

success!

it turned out that both my 3d card (that was in a PCI slot) and my sound card were causing it to stop.

i mistakenly didnt reofrmat before i installed so i got a few nasty errors but a reformat an install later, all is well!

cheers to all who helped!

Loz

OK, I sent it. Be sure to run the file to create a bootdisk--don't just copy the downloaded file to a disk since the file itself isn't bootable.
