im usin windows 98 and this has always been a problem. i hate the stupid "view as a webpage" option and the fact that 98 wont sort the files by type when i want it to, i click the type button, and close explorer and i come back and its back to sorting by name again, so i click the type button again and go into folder options and apply it to all folders and it keeps going back to name. i play around with the "remember each folders view settings" in folder options as well, but it has no effect. why wont it sort and stay that way? windows 95, ME 2000 and XP all do this fine, why does 98 seem to have so many dang problems? id run 95 on this laptop but my network card dont work, ME is too unstable and 2000/XP are just too much for a 233. any ideas guys? please advise :)

Try this: Setup the folder the way you want it. Then hold down the shift key and click the exit 'X'.

Open windows explorer then go to View folder options on the general. Now this is the way I do it. Put the dot in custom then hit the settings button. Where it says view web content in folders. Put the dot in only where I select "as view as a web page"(View Menu) then ok it then on the folder options one apply it. Then close it. Finally in windows explorer go to view and untick as a web page. Then close windows explorer. Reopen windows explorer. Now dont ask me why but I have had to allways go through that twice before windows would permenantly accept it. You may have to as well.

i got it to work, i opened windows explorer, set a folder up and pressed CTRL and the close button on the window and it worked perfectly. anyhoo, thanks for the replies, hopefull this will help others who also had this problem.

Since you stated that you hate the "view as a webpage" option and liked the way other OSes handled things, you might be interested in LitePC. It allows you to remove excess bloat from Windows 98 by giving you options to remove things you don't use. As an option, it also has the nice "shell swap" feature that I find especially handy. This allows you to use the more efficient Windows 95 Explorer (as long as you have a Windows 95 CD handy.) If you go with the 98micro setup, your boot times will be faster, and overall operation will be noticeably better, especially given the specs.

i just dumped that laptop that had windows 98, i got my dell workin (hopefully, time will tell) the backlight on my dell inspiron 7000 was being a pig and not liting up. i think the moniter cable is broken just from use. but now it seems to be working, so im using windows xp. :) smooth sailin ahead now, windows xp is by far the best os, other than 2000 pro. anyway, thanks for the replies guys! im still gonna check out litepc though. thanks again
