Hello,

Please help me figure out why I can't use my cd-rom. When I boot my PC, the light comes on for it, so it has power, also when i put a cd in, you can hear it spinning.

When i go to MY COMPUTER, i can not see the drive for my CD-ROM, It won't play any cd's or read any.

I have Windows 98 SE and want to upgrade, but it won't respond to any cd's.

Please help,

Thanks in advanced

Sorry if i insult your inteligence but has that drive been in the machine all the time.or is new or, has your computer been looked at for any reason.

Remember the light at the front is not a Power light. if its ont continuously then you have the IDE cable (Data cable) has been inserted the wrong way around.

if in doubt try to get another drive to test in your computer. if it works then its the drive itself.

Windows XP CD is bootable. If your CD-ROM works but the problem is that Win98SE doesn't recognise it you can upgrade or do clean install.

Some bios's will not show an IDE CD. It's listed as none or zero.

Is your CD drive set as a Slave to your hard drive on your Primary IDE controller, or is it set to master on the Secondary IDE controller?
If it is on the primary, try putting it on the 2nd. If its on the 2nd, then put it to slave on the prime.
I'm guessing its on the 2nd, and you either have a bad cable, its plugged in wrong, or theres a problem with the secondary controller.
Make sure the red stripe on the ribbon cable is matched to pin 1 on your drive, your jumper settings are correct, and also set all the IDE settings in your Bios to Auto.
If after all of this is checked, and the drive is still not recognized, I'd say the drive is a goner.

Hey, thx again guys.

I forgot all about checking my jumper setting, and the cable is good (tried it on my floppy) and red strip is facing PIN 1...let me give these jumpers a go...*crosses fingers*....hopefully this will do it.

You guys a great

Last I knew, floppy cables and cd cables had a different number of conductors. How did you test a 40 pin IDE cable on your floppy?
