Hi:
My mouse used to work on this computer. Then suddenly, I got the message "Windows did not detect a mouse attached to the computer. You can safely attach a serial mouse now.
To attach a mouse to a PS/2 port, you must first turn the computer off.
I tried reinstalling the mouse drive, attaching different mice, but no change...
I read in an archived message it would be good to set up the mouse in the safe mode, but I don't know how to do this. Any suggestions?

If your mouse and other mice are not detected I think we can rule out the mouse being the problem.
Most mice will work with the default microsoft drivers so dont need drivers to be loaded to be detected and work. So I think this rules out it being a driver problem.
Is this a serial, usb, or ps2 mouse ? Whatever. The relevent port on the motherboard could be defective.
If it is a serial port, is the serial port enabled in bios?
If the mouse is a ps2 mouse, possibly it is plugged into the keyboard ps2 plug.

Hello,
You probably need to re-enable the port in BIOS. How to: restart your machine and keep pressing DEL key (not DELETE key).Use Up/Down/L/R arrow keys to select from the main menu Integrated Peripherals, hit Enter key. There you have the option to enable the BIOS default, hit Esc key, select from the main menu SAVE & EXIT SETUP, hit Enter, Y, Enter to reboot. Hopefully the mouse will be back. Good luck.
Summary: My computer still has the old mouse port (not the PS/2 type). So, I think it is a serial mouse port? I tried to connect a PS/2 mouse to the motherboard by using the mouse adapter. When I install Win98...
