My computer still has the old mouse port (not the PS/2 type). So, I think it is a serial mouse port? I tried to connect a PS/2 mouse to the motherboard by using the mouse adapter. When I install Win98, the installation went successful. However, when I start the Win98, I got the error message: "Windows did not detect a mouse attached to the computer. You can safely attach a serial mouse now. To attach a mouse to a PS/2 mouse port, you must first turn the computer off". Please, help. What should I do? Please email it to me : bdarmawan@hotmail.com. Thanks.

Install the drivers for your serial mouse.
If that doesn't work, start the computer in safe mode (f8 at startup) and see if it detects the mouse. If it does detect a mouse in safe mode but not in real life, it's definitely a driver issue.

Adapters are notorious for not working. If the adapter is bought with the mouse they usually work. But if not, it has a good chance of not working. I suggest buying another mouse with an adapter.
