Hi, u guys all seem very nice a great with computers, so i wondered if you could help me fix my problem with my com. I recently formatted it and have put Win98SE on it.

The problem i have is windows keeps getting errors on any and all programs i try to run. This is mostly with MSN messenger, Media player, or Opera, although it has crashed all programs i have running at one point in time or another. This has got unbearable so i thought i should fix it. Also, explorer tends to crash and wipe out most of my programs if not just crash the computer.

I have downloaded all the updates i can find for windows, to no effect. Any help u guys, or gals, cud offer would be greatly appreciated!

To think i do computing for an A level.. some help thats been.. anyway, any help wud b great!

Ta, Dan

PS. If you need any other info just ask. Will check the errors that come up next time i get one. (which shouldnt be too long unfortunately)

You might try testing the memory

"To think i do computing for an A level.."

Indeed, that seems... incredible

Well, since you claim that everything crashes (although you've referenced no actual error messages), it's pretty much anyone's guess.

Basic culprits would be:

Hardware - bad or poorly seated RAM (test it) or failing hard drive (ditto, with Scandisk)

Settings - check your BIOS, maybe reset to 'default' values

Malware - so very much of this stuff around (and you do have MSN), recommended you scan your system - also take a look at msconfig & startups

File Corruption etc SFC? DxDiag?

Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure about the former.

lol.. nice, but doesnt help much. Its not the memory, checked that and its all fine.

The error message simply says:
this program has performed an ilegal operation and will be shut down.

it varies slightly over the programs, but im sure it must be the same problem casuing them all to crash.
