Windows cannot find program.exe

Comment:

Before I loaded ATM Deluxe, when I double clicked on a file in Windows Explorer, it would self launch. (Thus, Open the program as well as the file). Now I get a message: "Windows cannot find program.exe" I have looked on the Windows 95 CD and on other computers to locate this file, but none of them have it. What do I need to do to launch the program/file by double clicking on its file name? ANYBODY????

Hi,

When Windows tell you it cannot open program.exe file it mean it can't find executable file needed to run some program you're trying to run. I think you double clicked not on the program itself but on the shortcut to the program. Check properties of the file you're clicking on and look what actually the name has executable file you missed and when it was located. I think you accidentely deleted it somehow and need to reinstall ATM Delux.

Good luck, Igor M

I have ran into the "PROGRAM.exe" error syndrome. When I try to access a link from my Outlook Express E-Mail, I receive the error message. I have read some of your helpful hints but have not been able to find the correct combination. Has anyone find the solution to this specific problem?

I had the same problem after I deleted Netscape. I think it may have deleted more than I wanted. Anyway I have Internet Explorer 5 and I went to Tools, Internet Options, clicked Advanced tab, clicked Restore Defaults at the bottom, and then I checked Show friendly URLs box because it wouldn't let me go to favorite URL sites. This is when I kept getting the "can't find PROGRAM.exe. I hope this helps.

"Windows cannot find program.exe" is MS-speak. It means Windows doesn't know which program to launch. Go to Explorer-View-Options-File Types and select the correct the file association.

Usually when I would click on a .jpg or .gif file it would bring it right up. Now I get that same message too. If I open up a graphics program I can get it to come up. I am just now sure how to set a graphics program as a default.

No real wiz is gonna come on this forum and give everyone a quick fix (if only it were that simple) we're left to muddle it out for ourselves. ther's no Program.exe specificly, you won't find it on any download, it's a microsoft term meaning(like #9 said) that it can't find the correct application in plain sight to open the file. fiddle a little bit with winexplorer and your pesky unopened file and let ME know if you made any progress, because I sure haven't yet.

try this:

go to my computer/ view file types /find URL:Hypertext Transfer Protocol and remove it. It will ask if you want to - just say yes and then apply or close that window. If you have this program.exe problem its probably not there anyway. Open Internet Browser and go to tools/ options/ programs. Make sure Outlook express is your mail program. Press the "reset web settings" and check the IE should check if its the default browser option.
Close all applications and restart your computer. Open windows explorer and double click any html file.... IE should start and ask if its the default browser. You can uncheck this option later. Open O/Express and double click a URL in a mail message. IE should open a new window and try to find the clicked URL.......

good luck and happy browsing.

This is what I had to do: First let me say that I wanted to save my ol'bookmarks from Net. 4.06 and transfer them to 4.08. So what I had to do is delete Net. 4.06 in the usual way, in the control panel and deleted however, I also had to go to start, run and type: regedit ( for the registry, then go to edit, go to find and type Netscape and when it found Netscape right click on all programs and delete it. F3, restart, then reload the program. Let me say this, there was a lot of Netscapes that I had to delete even programs that had the word Netscape in it - I had to delete them as well. This was to make sure all of the ol'Netscape was out of my stsyem so that I could reload on a clean cpu. Make sense? After all the Netscape was out of my system I then downloaded Netscape SmartUpdate and there it was my ol'4.06 w/my ol'bookmarks and that error msg stating that it needed program.exe was gone! I at that point, downloaded all my bookmarks onto a disc, took off the 4.06 on my cpu, as I mentioned above, and then proceeded to download the 4.08 and there it was my brand Netscape. I then transferred all my bookmarks using windows explorer. I opened two windows of windows explorer one w/A: and the other w/C: displaying Netscape bookmarks on the right window and I just transferred my A: to my C: and that's it..
If you have any further questions regarding how or whatever plez feel free to e-mail me @
redzeuss@gci.net
Good Luck!
I hope everything that I have provided has and will help. It was hell for me..
Love & Peace

After I deleted Netscape, I got the "Cannot find PROGRAM" error when I clicked on a URL in email in Outlook Express. Here's what I did to correct it. In Internet Explorer, click Tools, Internet Options, and Advanced. Click Restore Defaults, and answer Yes if it asks you to confirm restore defaults. My URL Hypertext Transfer Protocol is again Internet Explorer, and I no longer get the "Cannot find PROGRAM" error. Hopes this helps some of you.

This problem arises when either a shortcut or a file association points to a path that has a space in the name without "quotes" around it.

This happens most often with the folder "Program Files" because so many of your programs are stored there.

The path is appended with the .exe extension, but because there are no quotes around the entire entry the results are cut off and it reads only program.exe.

There is no program named program.exe on your computer.

So, it depends on which shortcut or file association that is wrong that determines the solution, that’s why many of the various solutions above might or might not work.

regarding winsvrc.exe
appears to work the same as pretty park virus goto
http://www.jsiinc.com/TIP2100/rh2151.htm
follow instructions.
The only difference is your problem is winsvrc.exe not FILES32.VXD, once you reboot you'll need to run regular regedit, do a search for winsvrc, and delete the instances of it, usually in the run command areas, reboot again and you're done.
cheers

Many, if not most, of the above problem descriptions smack of the "Win32/Navidad.Worm", a relatively new and malicious email-borne virus. There are many sites on the Internet that describe the worm, so I won't take up space here. For more information and a good, FREE antivirus package, you might want to check out http://antivirus.cai.com for their "Personal Edition" (free) version of InoculateIT. You might also consider downloading and installing their "Mail Watcher" software, too.

Had the same problem "...cannot find winsvrc.exe" when I tried to launch ANY application. Downloaded the virus fix (navidad.com) suggested in #57 on another PC that was working properly, copied it to the problem PC via disk, and ran it. Solved the problem. All apps now run ok.

I actually ran the virus fix twice. The first time it said it couldn't finish because of an error, but the second time it finished but said my machine was not infected - so I guess the first run actually killed the virus.

Thanks James (#57)

I just fixed the problem on a clients PC in under 1 hour.

First
right click on start then click on explore
then click on the drive that has the windows directory and press F3 to find winsvrc.* and delete all files it finds.
Secound
goto c:\windows and find regedit.exe
rename to regedit.com (it will work this way but not as an .exe) then double click on regedit.com
third
find "winsvrc" the first will be HKEY_CLASS_ROOT\exefile\shell\open\command the right window will say c:\windows\system\winsvrc.exe %1 %2
delete the "c:\windows\system\winsvrc.exe"
part. Then find again and delete the others that you find.
exit regedit and rename it back to regedit.exe

every thing should work

This seems to be a common problem with all of us, So this doesn't mean that we all are dumb it means that Billy Boy and his crew needs to do some work on their O.S. Programs. I'm going to try all the tips that was given, and if any of them work I will send a bulliten to everyone informing you of my progress. Good Luck to all and hope with all of us on it we may find an answer. Thanks to all (shyloo)

I recently uninstalled software that came with a digital camera. Now when I try to view JPEG files from a floppy disk in the A drive, I get a message stating Cannot find PMVIEWER.exe. How can I correct this problem?

Thanxs for response 58! Took me 5 minutes to fix this annoying problem...

(An updated version of Norton System Works - Antivirus would also help!)
